New cast members Gabriella Wilde and Hugh Skinner make their Poldark debuts as filming gets under way in Cornwall

The hit period drama is set to return to BBC One for a 10-part series next year.

And as filming gets under way on the rugged coastline of Cornwall, South West England, the cast welcomed two new actors - Gabriella Wilde and Hugh Skinner - to the set on Tuesday.

Gabriella, 26, and Hugh, 30, both donned full 18th century costume as she began her role as Caroline Penvenen - the niece of landowner Ray Penvenen (Midsomer Murder's John Nettles) - and he filmed his first scenes as her new love interest, prospective MP Unwin Trevaunance.

The little known actress - whose biggest role to date was in 2014 box office hit Endless Love - sported a multi-layered outfit which was varying shades of purple as she was photographed in between takes with fellow newcomer Hugh.

Gabriella - whose also known as Gabriella Calthorpe - was wrapped up in a thick pink skirt with a padded grey-purple layer covering it.

A cropped open collared lilac jacket added an extra layer of warmth and with a wide-brimmed straw hat as well as nude-coloured leather gloves, she certainly looked the part of a potential girlfriend to an important acquaintance.

Gabriella - who is descended from real-life aristocracy and dubbed the 'unofficial stepsister' of Prince Harry's former girlfriend Cressida Bonas - wore appropriate make-up with her hair fashioned into tight curls.

Meanwhile, Hugh, looked dapper in a black robe-style coat teamed with brown slacks, a white pussybow blouse, brown leather calf-length boots and a black top hat.

The W1A star also sported unruly side-burns which added a certain handsomeness to his character.

The second series' official start date is yet to be confirmed but will run for an extra two episodes.

What is certain is that Aidan Turner will reprise his titular role as Ross Poldark with his servant-girl wife Demelza - who is played by redhead English rose Eleanor Tomlinson - also returning.

The on-screen lovebirds look set to continue their blossoming romance well into the second series as they were spotted sharing a tender kiss during filming on the Cornish coast.

While exact details concerning the plot are being kept under wraps, fans are in for a treat.

A spokesperson told The Telegraph: 'Ross Poldark must once again fight for his freedom when George Warleggan tries desperately to steal his mine and have him hanged as a revolutionary.

'Crippled by debts, Ross and Francis try to heal old wounds by joining forces in a new mine free of the Warleggans.

'But Ross and Elizabeth's feelings for each other cannot be repressed, and Ross risks everything in a desperate smuggling venture.'

With hunk Aidan adding: 'I love playing Ross Poldark and am proud to be a part of this production.

“The second series of 10 episodes presents a whole new set of challenges for both him and me and I can't wait for it to kick off again.'
