  • Pair were joined by close friends at pub in the capital, the Mail can reveal
  • Appearance adds fuel to rumours that Harry is keen to re-kindle romance
  • Also yesterday it emerged Cressida and actor Edward Holcroft have split

Prince Harry spent his 31st birthday with his ex-girlfriend Cressida Bonas, the day it emerged that she had split with her latest boyfriend.

After taking part in an official engagement in Sussex yesterday, the fifth in line to the throne flew back to London by helicopter to spend the evening with the beautiful blonde actress and a group of close friends at the Cross Keys pub in Chelsea, the Mail can reveal.

Harry and Cressida's appearance together will inevitably add to fuel to rumours that the prince is keen to re-kindle his romance with 26-year-old Cress, as she is known to her friends.

The couple dated for two years before breaking up last March after a row over attending the wedding of Harry's good friend, Guy Pelly.

But well-placed sources insisted last night that the pair are 'definitely' not back together.

Since their split last year, the prince has been linked – fleetingly, and sometime erroneously - with a number of girls, including actress Jenna Coleman, while Cressida enjoyed a brief relationship with fellow thespian and rising star Edward Holcroft, who appeared in Wolf Hall.

She and Edward were featured snuggling up to each other at a number of social events over the summer, including the Wimbledon Championships.

But they recently drifted apart, with sources close to Cressida insisting that it had 'never been that serious' and she hadn't even wanted him to meet her family.

'It just didn't get to that stage,' they said.

Shine on in a sequin embellished dress like Cressida's

Cressida Bonas is definitely making her mark in the world of fashion. Not content with having a high profile Mulberry campaign under her belt, now she's the star guest at the Dior Cruise 2016 Resort collection presentation in France.

She well and truly dressed the part, wearing an embellished blue mini dress featuring a retro polo neck. It hails from the Pre-Fall 2015 collection, and you can just about see it in the picture on the right. This dazzling little number was shown on the runway layered underneath another dress - so many Dior designs, so little time!

With Raf Simons at the helm the label has really reinvented itself, and anyone who has seen the recently released Dior and I documentary will have fallen in love all over again with the French fashion house.

Unfortunately the designs aren't available to buy online, but don't worry. We've found plenty of Cressy-esque options on the virtual high street. Make sure you shine in this Motel dress, or Juicy Couture has got some snazzy sequinned numbers too.

Cressida and Harry have always remained good friends despite going their separate ways, having been introduced by the prince's cousin, Princess Eugenie, one of Cressida's best friends.

They also share many mutual pals, including the Branson family and Cressida's half-brother, Jacobi Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe.

One friend, however, moved last night to dampen speculation that the pair were making a go of things again.

They said: 'They were out with a group of friends having a drink to celebrate Harry's 31st. It was also a chance for him to say hello to some of his pals, having spent the summer working in Africa.

'Harry and Cress have always kept in touch and are fond of each other. They aren't together at the moment and although you can never say never, I would be very surprised if it happened [again].

'Cressida is very fond of him but, well, he didn't quite cut the mustard. The issues that were there when they broke up haven't changed.'

Asked what those issues might be, the friend said: 'I think Harry just expected Cress to keep up with his lifestyle. But she isn't wealthy, she's a hard-working girl who just couldn't do that.

'Her career is going well and she just has other things going on in her life, she's not the type to be at anyone's beck and call.'

Other sources said Cressida, although fond of Harry, had struggled to cope with the attention that dating a member of the royal family brought and was actually worried that the romance would hold her career back.

Ironically, it has gone from strength to strength since she and Harry parted ways, with Cressida winning a very well-received lead role in An Evening With Lucian Freud on stage in London and a contract to front the 2015 campaign of leading British fashion House Burberry.

She is due to appear in Harvey Weinstein's new film Tulip Fever, which will be released later this year, and yesterday, it emerged that she is to star in Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes' new television drama, Doctor Thorne.

The drama is an adaptation of Anthony Trollope's 19th Century novel and Cressida will play Patience Oriel, 'a girl blessed with every gift except money', alongside established stars including Tom Hollander and Ian McShane.

Cressida is the youngest daughter of socialite Lady Mary Curzon and Old Harrovian businessman Jeffrey Bonas.

In all, Lady Mary has five children by three of her four husbands, including Isabella, married to Virgin heir Sam Branson, who are all hugely protective of 'Smalley', as Cressida is known in the family.

Kensington Palace declined to comment, but a source close to Harry told the Mail: 'He went out with a group of friends to celebrate his birthday and Cressida was among them. She is just a friend.'
