Carly cruises, Christie fights, Trump bullies and Jeb defends the Bush clan: War breaks out on stage as The Donald mocks his opponents but takes as many punches as he throws

Donald Trump mocks his opponents and Jeb Bush defends Bush clan at GOP debate

GOP frontrunner Donald Trump (right) found himself consistently playing defense on Wednesday night as rivals who had previously felt the sting of his punches fought back during the Republican candidates' live debate on CNN. Carly Fiorina got the biggest applause for her riposte over Trump's suggestion last week that her 'face' was unelectable. Despite Trump's assertions he had been misinterpreted, Fiorina told the audience: 'I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said.' He replied with: 'I think she's got a beautiful face and I think she's a beautiful woman' - but his sugary-sweet praise fell flat. Jeb Bush also landed an glancing uppercut by asking Trump to apologize for suggesting that his wife's Mexican ancestry had influenced his immigration views. Trump told him: 'I've said nothing wrong. But I do hear she's a lovely woman.' Despite the many blistering attacks on Trump, he ended the night with the most-searched name on Google in 44 of the 50 U.S. states, according to Google Trends.

'She's got a beautiful face': Trump tries (and fails) to bury the hatchet with Fiorina as she coolly suggests how his attack on her looks will have alienated him from female voters 'all over the country'

Donald Trump tries to bury the hatchet with Carly Fiorina

Carly Fiorina began last night's debate holding back on the throttle. Goaded into criticizing nemesis Donald Trump's temperament she said it's a 'long race' and moved on. But when moderator Jake Tapper asked her about a profile released last week in which the real estate mogul seemingly made fun of her face - though he said afterward he was talking about her 'persona' - Fiorina put her foot on the gas. Playing off a slap Trump had just taken at Bush on women's issues, she said, 'Mr. Trump said that he heard Mr. Bush very clearly, and what Mr. Bush said. I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said.'

The Donald and his many faces: Hilarious roundup of Trump's most expressive debate moments

Sure, last night's Republican debate was supposed to be about substance over style, but you'd be forgiven for thinking you could watch Donald Trump's contribution with the volume off.
