Kanye breaks the rules...again! West unveils NYFW collection in front of a star-filled crowd and matching Kim and North - but last-minute show leaves fashion pack unimpressed
- The 38-year-old debuted the latest designs for his collaboration with Adidas on Wednesday afternoon
- Front row attendees included Anna Wintour, Lorde and Drake, as well as his wife Kim Kardashian and daughter North West
- The designer's sister-in-law Kylie Jenner and her friend Bella Hadid walked in the show, but their faces remained partially hidden under blue caps
- Kanye sparked anger and frustration among his fellow designers after adding his show to the NYFW schedule at the last minute
Despite much controversy over Kanye West's decision to show off the official New York Fashion Week calendar, the rapper unveiled his second installment of Yeezy on Wednesday afternoon.
Much like Yeezy I, which was made in collaboration with Adidas (Yeezy II, is not), clothes included nude body suits and layers upon layers of utility separates (parka jackets, long coats, oversize knits, hoodies, and tailored canvas pants) in colors ranging from blush, to army green, brown and then black.
And while the show attracted one of New York Fashion Week's most star-studded front rows thus far, with guests including Anna Wintour, Drake, and Lorde, as well as Kanye's wife Kim Kardashian and his sisters-in-law Khloe and Kourtney, and Kendall Jenner, despite its last-minute scheduling, it seems that fashionistas further afield were not overly fond of the rapper-turned-designer's latest Yeezy offering.

Quite the crowd: Rapper-turned-designer Kanye West unveiled his second Yeezy collection at New York Fashion Week on Wednesday afternoon in front of a star-studded front row
Front row: Many expected Kendall to walk in the show but instead the model sat second row behind Seth Meyers, Anna Wintour, Kim Kardashian, North West, Lorde, Riccardo Tisci, and Kourtney Kardashian, alongside Jaden Smith, his girlfriend Sarah Snyder, rapper 2 Chainz and Latin singer Miguel
Cracking a smile: Seth, Anna and Kim looked pleased as punch to be sitting next to one another on the front row
Go Nude with Kim's pink American Apparel bodysuit
She's a big fan of the nude trend in fashion and Kim Kardashian is regularly spotted rocking an outfit entirely in this shade. Heading to support husband Kanye's NYFW show along with baby North, Kim wowed in an ensemble of light brown ribbed leggings over a nude pink bodysuit and finished off with nude Perspex heels and a camel-colored duster coat (did we mention she loves nude?).
Showing off that famous figure, Kim's bodysuit stole the show in this outfit and fitted her curves perfectly. The nude pink low neck body is from American Apparel, and although this exact shade is no longer available you can pick up the thong bodysuit in a range of other colors including gray, white navy and black. Click the link to the right to purchase your own.
If you're with Kim on the nude addiction then shop our edit below of alternative bodysuits from the likes of Wolford, Walcoal and Missguided, all of which offer a similar shape and color. Tuck them into high-waisted skirts or trousers to steal Kim's look.
One show attendee, using the Twitter handle Who Is Mike, recapped the show in one tweet: 'Kanye West out here dressing models like they're from district 12 in the Hunger Games.'
Another wrote: 'Kanye West proves that it takes a lot of money to look incredibly poor,' and a third person noted: 'Kanye's clothing line is LITERALLY how I used to dress when I was a homeless teenager.'
But there was also some positive feedback for the rapper posted on the social media site, with leisurewear brand Adidas Originals sending West a public message of support, tweeting: 'Today adidas long-term partner Kanye West presented a collection as a designer in his own right. Congratulations, Mr. West! [sic]'
One fan, posting under the username Markus Robinson, said of the collection: '@kanyewest did a great job with hisYeezy Season 2 presentation. Love him or not he isn't taking 'NO' as an answer.'
A host of fashion journalists showed their support for the designer, with the Financial Times' Jo Ellison writing in her show report: 'Were the clothes in this Desert Storm meets Spanx collection good? Surprisingly so. If you want a dark olive sweatshirt, or sand-coloured snow boot any time soon, you need look no further.
'These earth-toned basics were a sartorial no-brainer, although I would caution anyone to wear a flesh coloured bodysuit without checking their rear view in the mirror beforehand. Kudos, too, for the lack of branding.'
Less than impressed: There was much controversy over Kanye's decision to show off the official New York Fashion Week calendar - and it seems sparked just as much debate with some speaking out to criticize his collection as being 'beige' and 'unimpressive'
Happy couple: Kim seemed more than happy to represent her husband's design efforts by wearing one of his ensembles, a beige vest and ribbed leggings, to the event, just as she did when he showcased his first collection
Keeping calm: Anna, pictured next to Late Night host Seth, was no doubt thrilled that North West managed to keep her cool during the show. In February, the fashion veteran looked less than impressed when the toddler threw a tantrum during Kanye's first catwalk show
Firm friend: Vogue's Editor-in-Chief actually looked thrilled to be seated next to the toddler - although North West looked much more interested in something on the other side of her
Focus: Man of the moment Kanye looked slightly tense as he headed out to the show
Model mom: Kim donned an ensemble from her husband's new collection for the show - as did the couple's adorable daughter North West
Speaking about the new range, Glamour.com's Ella Alexander added: 'The industry has been criticised for not being racially diverse enough and West countered that yesterday by using models from different ethnic backgrounds, shapes and sizes, each wearing military-esque parkas, leggings and hoodies. They were arranged into cult-like, military squadrons, with one model designated as the leader, barking orders to the rest of their troop.'
The Guardian's Hannah Marriott, too, praised his offering. Of his foray into fashion, she wrote: 'He’s definitely getting there. How he will combine his burgeoning fashion career with campaigning to be president, though, is anybody’s guess.'
Other guests at Kanye's show included TV host Michael Strahan, who sat next to Khloe, Jaden Smith and his girlfriend Sarah Snyder, Late Night host Seth Meyers, who sat alongside Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna, rapper 2 Chainz, and Latin singer Miguel.
Givenchy designer and long-time friend of the Kardashian family Riccardo Tisci, who showcased his own New York Fashion Week collection on Friday, also turned out to show his support, and sat alongside Kim on the front row, keeping North West entertained by playing with his hat.
Taking to Instagram, he wrote: 'MAN I AM SO PROUD OF YOU, YOU MADE YOUR DREAM COME TRUE. THE COLOR PALETTE WAS HEAVEN. THE SHAPES AND MATERIALS REPRESENT TODAY'S AMERICA. LOVE #kanyewest #yeezy #bravo'.
Like last season's Yeezy I, today's show also featured a performance by artist Vanessa Beecroft. And like Yeezy I, the rapper-turned-designer also released a new song during Yeezy II, titled 'I feel it'.
Shrouded in secrecy, models were asked to sign a $10million non-disclosure agreement before walking in the show, which was held at Skylight Modern in Manhattan, and live streamed around the world in select movie theaters.
Discreet: Hidden under blue caps, Kylie Jenner, pictured second in the line, and Bella Hadid, pictured third in the line, kept a low profile as they modeled in the show, while the likes of Khloe Kardashian and TV host Michael Strahan watched on from the front row
Much like Yeezy I, clothes included nude body suits and layers of utility separates (parka jackets, long coats, oversize knits, hoodies, and tailored canvas pants) in colors from blush, army green, brown and black
Taking to Instagram, Kanye's close friend and fellow fashion designer, Riccardo Tisci, wrote: 'MAN I AM SO PROUD OF YOU, YOU MADE YOUR DREAM COME TRUE. THE COLOR PALETTE WAS HEAVEN. THE SHAPES AND MATERIALS REPRESENT TODAY'S AMERICA. LOVE #kanyewest #yeezy #bravo'
The Kardashian clan! Khloe, Kendall, and Kourtney all attended the show to lend their support to sister Kim and her husband
Daddy and daughter: North West didn't seem at all phased by the attention her father was receiving backstage, and kept putting her hands up to his face while he was speaking to his guests
Sister, sister: Kendall and Khloe posed for a cute candid snap backstage at the show
Family ties: Kendall and Kourtney took turns holding on to their beautiful niece North
Lonely back there Kendall? Miss Jenner looked a little bit bored as she sat in the second row behind her family members and Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, whose show she walked in last week
Getting cozy with Kendall: The 19-year-old catwalk star towered over Jaden Smith (left) as the two posed for a picture, while she also took the time to pose alongside rapper Drake
Sage advice: Vogue's Editor-at-Large Andre Leon Talley took a moment backstage to chat with the famously straight-faced designer, who actually managed to crack a smile at whatever the fashion veteran was telling him
Three's a very trendy crowd: Givenchy designer Riccardo paused backstage to take a picture with Courtney Love (left) and Blondie singer Debbie Harry (right)
The real star of the show? Kanye's guests all seemed delighted to meet North West, including singer Courtney
Many expected Kendall Jenner to walk in the show - which started 45 minutes late - but instead, the model sat second row behind Kim Kardashian and North West.
However hidden under blue caps, Kylie Jenner and Bella Hadid kept a low profile as they sauntered down the runway.
Other models stepped out in the industrial-looking space wearing a very similar style of tight-fitting beige and khaki green ensembles to those that we saw showcased during Kanye's first design show.
Several models were clad only in skin-tight flesh-colored vests and leggings, while others were layered up in baggy army-style jackets, loose-fitting sweaters and long-sleeved tops, all of which were created using the same pared-back palette of muted shades.
It is the slightly unflattering skin-tight ensembles that seem to have sparked the most ferocious debate between fashion fans, with many voicing their thoughts on the less-than-demure designs online throughout the short catwalk.
'Looks like Yeezy designed the costumes for the next season of The Walking Dead,' Twitter user J. Marquez posted, with many others chiming in to voice their agreement.
While the negative reaction to the collection may have come as something of a disappointment to Kanye, the designer is certainly no stranger to controversy when it comes to his clothing range.
Family support: Khloe donned an all-black ensemble for the event, as well as a pair of simple black Christian Louboutin shoes, while Kourtney opted for thigh-high boots and a loose-fitting smock dress
Young love: Jaden Smith attnded the show with his girlfriend Sarah Snyder; the pair have been practically inseparable for much of Fashion Week, and have been seen canoodling on the front row of several shows, and at events
Famous friends: Singer Lorde (left) and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour (right) both attended the star-studded event
Friendly support: Rapper Drake also turned out to watch his fellow rapper Kanye's show, just one day after sitting in the front row at his rumored girlfriend Serena Williams' fashion show
Earlier this week, his fellow streetwear designer Anne Bowen spoke out against the rapper, revealing that she was forced to change the date of her own show to stop it from clashing with Kanye's after he announced his plans to host a runway event at the last minute - without including details on the official New York Fashion Week schedule.
'It's like we are David and he is Goliath,' the designer fumed to Women's Wear Daily, adding: 'We have been prepping for a year for this at considerable financial, labor, and commitment-cost to our company.
'Our show date has been scheduled for months and has been on the Fashion Calendar for weeks,' she continued, adding: 'We went through all the proper channels to make this a reality.'
'And just yesterday we learned that Kanye West is having a show at the same time on the same date as ours,' she said of the debut of her Nomad VII collection.
The mogul only announced on Saturday that he, too would be showing his new fashion line at the fashion-focused event, sparking outrage and frustration among many of the industry's elite.
'Kanye knows he is a media sensation and it is just not ethical to do this,' Anne added. 'We have put our heart and soul into our show, and should not be stepped on like this.'
Perfect pair: Bella shared this photo of her and Kylie modeling in the show on Instagram. 'Thank you Kanye!' she captioned the picture. 'All the love and support for you'
Strike a pose: Kourtney, Khloe, Kendall and Kylie snapped a playful selfie with rapper 2 Chainz backstage at the show
She took to Twitter on Sunday to share her disappointment over the situation, writing: 'Wanna know how to create a logistical nightmare? Check this out @kanyewest,' along with a link covering Kanye's surprise announcement.
The frustrated designer went on to hashtag the call out: '#AnnebowenvsKanye #ThanksKanye #nyfw.'
Anne's publicist also claimed at the time that they had to 'scramble like crazy' to sort out details for the newly-rescheduled show, which, she added, was expected to 'cost us a lot of money.'
The designer has listed a complaint with the CFDA - Council of Fashion Designers of America - Fashion Calendar.
