The airline informed travelers on Twitter that technical issues had now been resolved and flights would be taking off 'soon' but delays are expected to continue.

According to flight-tracking website FlightAware.com, some 262 flights on American Airlines have reported delays and five were canceled.

American Airlines confirmed to DailyMail.com that 291 flights were delayed in total due to the outage.

A spokesman that the number is out of 1,553 mainline and regional departures for the day from the three airports in question.

It comes at an awkward time for American Airline Group Inc. - the world's biggest airline.

In less than a month, the company plans to complete combining the reservations systems of American and its US Airways subsidiary and retire the US Airways brand.

But combining technology systems is a difficult feat that has tripped up other airlines, notably leading to several outages at United Airlines after it merged with Continental Airlines in 2010.

United suffered two major outages this summer.

American has made meticulous plans to avoid a similar fate. Among other moves, it will reduce flights to lighten the load on its network while it combines the two reservations systems.
