A 25-year-old Chicago woman has been identified as the unruly passenger who caused an American Airlines flight to be diverted to Indianapolis earlier this week after allegedly punching two people and trying to bite flight attendants.

Daniela Velez-Reyes has been charged with disturbing a commercial flight, criminal recklessness, multiple battery counts, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

According to Indianapolis International Airport officials, Velez-Reyes turned violent while on American Airlines Flight 1284 from Miami to Chicago Monday and had to be subdued after hitting another passenger and kissing and punching a flight attendant in the face.

Airport spokesman Jeff Dutton said the 25-year-old Chicago resident also kicked a police officer who boarded the plane in Indianapolis and took her into custody.

Court documents obtained by Indianapolis Star Wednesday revealed additional details about the bizarre in-flight disturbance.

The incident began unfolding when a flight attendant spotted Velez-Reyes hit another passenger in the shoulder. According to witness accounts, the traveler was struck after he complained that Velez-Reyes was kicking his seat.

The flight attendant intervened and led the woman to the back of the plane in a bid to calm her down. That is when out of nowhere the passenger grabbed the stewardess, kissed her and then punched her in the face, court documents state.

Other cabin crewmembers came to their colleague's aid and tried to restrain Velez-Reyes with zipties, but the 25-year-old put up a fight, prompting the pilot to make an announcement over the PA system asking for the help of able-bodied male passengers.

Darnell Wilson, of Chicago, was one of the four men who answered the pilot's call and helped detain the out-of-control traveler.

‘She was on the ground,’ Wilson told the station WLS. ‘She wouldn't stand up. She kept hollering that she was going to mess herself, like she was cursing people out. It was really absurd.’

Even after Velez-Reyes was restrained, she tried to bite and kick flight attendants and other passengers, according to the court filings.

Passenger Jim Saviano had his cell phone at the ready as the Chicago woman was escorted off the plane by police.

In the clip, the passenger appears disheveled as she is led down the aisle by two officers.

At one point, she looks at one of the cops and tells him something inaudible, prompting the officer to turn her face away from him.

In another video shot by traveler Brian Salvi, Velez-Reyes is heard crying out: 'Owww, call my mom!' as the cops lead her towards the exit with her hands restrained behind her back with what appears to be zipties.

Speaking to the Chicago station WLS after the plane landed with a 90-minute delay, passenger Maria Frendt said the woman appeared disoriented throughout the entire flight, was having trouble finding her seat and was sweating profusely.

On his twitter page, Saviano, a DJ from Los Angeles, described a chaotic scene aboard the aircraft in that moment: 'Just had emergency landing..pilot aggressively yelled cabin lock down everyone in their seats/need large men to restrain a psngr [sic] immediately.’

When the plane landed in Indianapolis, Velez-Reyes was transferred into the custody of Marion County Sheriff's deputies and taken to Marion County Jail.

The flight left Indianapolis shortly after 7pm, arriving in Chicago 43 minutes later.
