Vermont governor, 59, announces he's engaged to 31-year-old girlfriend

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin is engaged to his girlfriend, and they plan to marry within the next year.

The governor's office announced Thursday that the 59-year-old Shumlin recently became engaged to 31-year-old Katie Hunt. They have not chosen a wedding date yet.

After the three-term governor leaves office in early 2017, they plan to make their home in Westminster West, in southern Vermont near where both grew up.

'Peter is my best friend and the love of my life,' said Katie Hunt. 'I could not be happier to continue on together living in the state we both grew up in and love so much.' 

The governor's office says Hunt is an artist and landscape gardener who is finishing her degree at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.

Shumlin announced in 2013 that he and his first wife were divorcing. He has two adult daughters.

The Democratic governor says he and Hunt are happy to share the news of their upcoming marriage.

'I feel so lucky to have Katie in my life, and we are very happy to share this news,' Shumlin said.
