Amal Clooney and Cherie Blair are going head-to-head in the case of jailed ex-president of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed - the country's first democratically-elected president. Amnesty called his 2012 imprisonment a 'travesty of justice'. Mrs Clooney has flown to the Maldives to work pro-bono to secure Nasheed's freedom, but Cherie's London-based legal firm Omnia Strategy has taken the side of the Maldivian government.

There were some very opposing views of actress Kate Winslet at the Toronto Film Festival this week. On Monday night it was not her acting that divided opinion, but her rather splendid figure, clad in a Badgley Mischka figure-hugging ball gown, as those on two sides of the catwalk were afforded a completely different Kate to the gawpers across the way. Lynda Blackwell, the Financial Conduct Authority's head of mortgages, told a debate that older people who 'sit quite happily in a very big house' should be encouraged to downsize. Ms Blackwell, who lives in a £1.28million house with five bedrooms in south London, was accused of making 'lazy and wrong' assumptions and blaming retired people for the problem. Older people's groups were furious at the suggestion they were blocking the market for younger buyers, saying many could not downsize even if they wanted to because of a chronic shortage of retirement housing.

Dale Carter, 23, of Middlesbrough, has spent the last decade in and out of the courts. The Neato BotVac Connected is the first robotic vacuum linked to the internet, and uses the same technology as Google's driverless cars to map out a house and navigate around objects. Once a room is clean it will move on to the next one, with its low, flat shape meaning it can even clean under beds. Left to its own devices, it will clean up to 5,000 square feet and functions for up to two hours before it takes itself back to its dock for charging. As well as a smartphone it can also be programmed by a button on the vacuum.

The radio presenter revealed last week how she found the coconut crab - so-called because it can crush coconuts with its pincers - in her suitcase on her return from the Pacific island of Mogmog. The mother-of-two (left) was on the island filming a new TV show and believes the locals might have put the crab in her luggage 'as a gift'. She said later decided to release the crab (right in file image), which feeds on rats and can grow to more than 3ft long, on Hampstead Heath (inset). The phone of Emily Clark of Powder Springs, Georgia who died in a tragic car crash last April was returned to her family last week with hundreds of unseen photos of the Clark's in happy times.Also found in Emily's iPhone which was protected in a turquoise case were texts from the day of the crash from Emily's family and even one of her professors asking if she was OK. Sadly, she did not survive and could not answer her friends and family's desperate plea for her to contact them.

Authorities have identified 'Baby Doe' who was found dead on a Boston Harbor beach last month, a law enforcement official says. The girl has been named as Bella (inset and left), the daughter of 40-year-old Rachelle Bond (bottom left and the mother pictured with her daughter center). The official said police searched a Boston home in Mattapan on Thursday and have been in contact with family members. Bond and her boyfriend, 35-year-old Michael McCarthy (top left), have been arrested in connection with the girl's death. McCarthy faces a murder charge while Bond faces a charge of accessory after the fact of murder. They are expected to be arraigned on Monday. McCarthy is not the girl's biological father, a law enforcement source said. Bella's body was discovered on June 25 on Deer Island in Winthrop. A computer-generated image of her (inset right) brought about an estimated 60million views in two weeks as a massive social media campaign was launched to try to find out what happened to her.

Based on Earth being the size of a half-inch marble, the team calculated the scale sizes of each orbit and planet, which were represented by balls and lightbulbs. They then shot time-lapse images (inset) of their cars driving around the orbits over 36 hours from the vantage point of a nearby mountain. Whitey Bulger (above and top left), the notorious gangster turned FBI informant, is played by Johnny Depp (below left) in the film Black Mass that opens today. Despite committing scores of murders and running an extensive drug smuggling network in Boston in the 1970s, Bulger managed to evade justice until 2011 when he was caught in Santa Monica after 16 years on the run. Now a new book has revealed the full extent of the police protection handed to Bulger - and explains why it took so long to bring him to justice.

The treasure hunters who found the Nazi gold train in the small Polish town of Walbrzych claim the long-lost Amber rooms (top right), worth around £250million, could be inside. The armoured train (file photo, bottom right) is thought be laden with gold, stolen paintings and gems looted by the Nazis as they plundered across Europe. Piotr Koper and Andreas Richter discovered the train close to the small town of Walbrzych in south-west Poland, after a German man revealed its location on his deathbed. The local government allegedly knows the exact location of the train, which is thought to be hidden on a 2.5-mile-stretch somewhere along the train line from Wroclaw to the town, but refuse to disclose it to the public.

Beijing based environmental monitoring project, the World Air Quality Index is publishing real time pollution maps across the world (pictured) to reveal levels of harmful particulate matter. PM2.5 particulates from car fumes and fossil fuel burning are thought to pose a high risk to human health. The maps allow city residents to see when are the best times to venture outside.

Helen Turnbull, 36, (centre) lost her job, marriage and two children over her relationship with a 16-year-old at her school in County Durham - and found herself in court again over the crashes. Mobile phone footage (above) of the incident was played to Teesside Crown Court and showed Turnbull in the driver's seat of her Toyota Aygo car, seemingly intoxicated and slurring her words.

The Selfie From Hell footage, viewed more than 2.8m times since its release last month, was made by German production student Meelah Adams - who also stars in it - and author-director Erdal Ceylan. It focuses on a selfie-snapping woman who notices a looming figure appear behind her in the photos, and is subsequently attacked by what turns out to be a horrifying zombie.
