After his fashion designer wife showcased attention-grabbing Hawaiian-print dresses and bold gingham blouses at New York Fashion Week, David Beckham admits he prefers to sport a more laid-back look.

The 40-year-old father-of-four said he tries to 'keep it simple' when buying clothes and relies on vintage jeans, t-shirts and leather biker jackets to ensure he's looking on-trend.

Former footballer David - who has been married to Victoria for 16 years - discussed his style with Metro after starring in a new short film called Outlaws for Belstaff, which will be released on 22 September.

Speaking about what it is about a leather jacket that makes him feel special, David, who is an ambassador for the iconic outerwear brand, said: 'When I started riding bikes in LA I came across the coolest Belstaff jacket in a vintage store and it is still one of my favourites.'

He added: 'A biker jacket has that fantastic mix of being something really functional and protective, while also looking great and effortlessly cool.'

David, who has previously created two capsule collections for Belstaff, recently shot a movie for the new season line alongside Pulp Fiction's Harvey Keitel.

Directed by Geremy Jasper and produced by Liv Tyler, the short film was created on location in Mexico. It is described as 'surreal film within a film starring The Stranger', a mysterious drifter and motorcycle stuntman, haunted by memories of a beautiful Trapeze Artist and hunted by a maniacal Director seeking revenge.

The cast also includes Inherent Vice star Katherine Waterston and Raging Bull's Cathy Moriarty.

David said of the project: 'I always love to challenge myself. Filming Outlaws in the Mexican desert with Belstaff and the Legs team – not to mention working alongside Harvey, Cathy and Katherine – was an adventure I will never forget!'

He recently spoke of his desire to break into the acting world, telling The Times: 'I am very aware that many sportsmen and other celebrities have turned their hand to acting and failed.

'I know that it is a tough profession, where you need a huge amount of skill and discipline, and I wouldn't want to push myself forward too soon, without learning more about it, and doing a lot more practice.

'But what I have done so far, I have loved. I can deal with most things. I am a well-known person, so I have got used to criticism.'

David is set to appear in his first big screen role in the Guy Ritchie film Knights of the Roundtable, which is due out next year.

Meanwhile Gavin Haig, CEO of Belstaff commented: 'Belstaff stands for moto heritage, speed, freedom, adventure and daring, and these values are all represented by the mysterious stranger of David Beckham's character, central to the film.

'Our iconic, timeless style and championing of the independent spirit are other values grounded within Outlaws. We hope to relay the message that we celebrate those individuals who seek out their own epic adventures in life.'

David stepped out earlier this week with his eldest son Brooklyn to support Victoria at her New York Fashion Week spring/summer 2016 presentation.

Dressed smartly in a taupe-coloured suit and white shirt, he beamed proudly throughout the showcase and was spotted chatting to US Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

There was no sign of the Beckhams' other children – Romeo, Cruz and daughter Harper – for the show.
