Wearing a pair of jeans with his character's khaki wax jacket, the actor - who, in real life, was later seen hitting the gym - cuts an intense figure as he wrestled his co-star into the street.

Hiding under a suit jacket, the accompanying actor's identity remains undisclosed, but he was certainly working to Idris' strengths.

The image, released by BBC America was accompanied by a detailed caption which informed fans of what to expect.

It reads: 'Luther's back. Pitted against his most chilling adversary yet, haunted by the ghosts of his past and hell-bent on retribution, he's drawn into a terrifyingly complex case that pushes him closer to the edge than he's ever been.'

Fans can expect to see the new installment later this year - and are evidently excited. After sharing the image on his Twitter account, Idris was flooded with messages.

'OMG SO EXCITED!!! Missed Luther so much', one wrote, while another said: 'Luther still has his game face on - Business as usual. Anxiously Waiting for his return.'

The BBC One Crime drama series centres on a near-genius murder detective [Elba], whose brilliant mind can't always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions.

But Idris' career isn't resting on that alone. The busy actor's next big screen projects include The Jungle Book, with Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray and Christopher Walken.

He'll also appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron, with Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo.

He is also rumoured to be in running for the role of James Bond.
