'We took a rest stop': Rapper T.I. confirms he has dropped protege Iggy Azalea, as he admits her Twitter beef with Q-Tip was the final straw

Rapper T.I. has confirmed he is no longer working with former protege Iggy Azalea.

The hip hop mogul said he decided to part ways with the 25-year-old Australian rapper because he was tired of putting out fires and defending her  - only to have her turn around and create more drama.

'It took a bit of a rest stop,' he told New York radio station Hot 97 when asked about their relationship, admitting that the two have not talked recently.

And even though he defended her at the time, Iggy's Twitter beef with Q-Tip was the final straw, the Grammy-winner admitted.

However, TMZ reports that the Aussie rapper says she and her former mentor actually split years ago, when she left his Grand Hustle label in 2013 and signed with Island Def Jam, which released her debut album The New Classic in 2014.

And she says their decision to go their separate ways was mutual, TMZ reports.

But speaking to Ebro In The Morning on Wednesday, T.I. said he cut ties because he was sick of repeatedly having to defend his controversial and outspoken mentee.

However, he said Iggy - who he hints suffered from a culture clash around American race issues due to her Australian background -  became a flash-point for many people during a sensitive time in US race relations.

'In her defense, she had a lot thrown at her at one time. Any human being anywhere (is going to) have a hard time adjusting,' he said.

'It’s very difficult to be the new kid and to be the butt of the jokes and to be directed, like, be the direction of all the negativity, you know what I mean?,' he said.

'It came at a time when culturally in this nation - when she's not from here - we were actually looking for a source to place that pent-up aggression.'

In addition to Q-Tip, the Black Widow rapper has had social media spats with rapper Azalea Banks, Britney Spears, shoe designer Steve Madden, and also has hit out at Snoop Dog and Eminem for sexist jibes.

Iggy- born Amythest Kelly - has been criticized for allegedly appropriating black culture and being dismissive of any backlash from African-American artists.

In December, Q-Tip, a member of legendary hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, reached out to Iggy with a series of 40 Tweets about hip-hop culture and the genre's historical and political context.

Unimpressed, Iggy tweeted back: 'I'm also not going to sit on Twitter & play hip-hop squares with strangers to somehow prove I deserve to be a fan of or influenced by hip-hop.'

When that caused an uproar, T.I. stepped in to defend her on Twitter.

But it was the breaking point, he now says.

'After I kind of had smoothed it over, like okay, 'What is really meant to be said here is...' Then, after it was cool, everything was cool,' he told Hot 97.

'And then they kind of came back and undid what I had just [fixed],' the music mogul said.

'I'm a loyal partner. If I rock with you, I'm gon' rock with you... Right, wrong, we're gonna discuss that in the car.'

Iggy reached out to T.I. as an aspiring rapper, and he took her under his wing, helping to craft the 'Fancy' hitmaker's rise to the top of the charts. He executive produced her 2012 EP Glory and signed her to his Grand Hustle Records before she left for Island Def Jam in 2013.

However, T.I. thinks Iggy will be fine without him.

'They have the talent, they have the charisma,' he said of her team.
