Inside a killing machine: The ghostly century-old images of a German WWI U-Boat raised

The twin-screw U-boat 110 was readying an attack on a convoy of merchant vessels when her periscope was sighted, only 50 yards away, and she was forced to the surface by Allied depth charges. With her forward diving rudders jammed in the up position and fuel tank damaged, the submarine was then rammed twice by the H.M.S. Garry and hit with several bursts of gunfire. The relentless attack caused the U-Boat to sink off the north east coast of England, not far from the town of Hartlepool, on July 19, 1918. She was recovered later that year and before being sold for scrap a series of photographs were taken providing a rare glimpse of the U-Boat's mechanics.

From campervan tour to Lady of the Manor: It's a delightfully dotty love story about an air hostess who sold up to drive around Britain in search of Mr Right... and bagged herself a Scottish laird

Nicci Taylor drove around UK searching for Mr Right bagged Scottish laird James Pollard

Having struggled to find love, Nicci Taylor (left) announced in an online blog that she was going to sell her home, a three-bed semi in the Wirral ('quite ordinary, postage-stamp garden, no boathouse,' she says), and all her possessions, buy a campervan and set off on an adventure to find a partner. She would tour Britain in the camper accompanied only by her dog Milo (pictured inset), stopping off for dates along the way. Eventually she met James Pollard (right), a Lord of the Manor in Scotland. Love blossomed and within four days he had asked her to stay for ever, uttering the words that every singleton living in a campervan wants to hear: 'What's mine is yours.'

300million album sales, £85million in the bank - but can you name this low-profile rock legend who now wears sensible anoraks and grey trousers?

Queen bass player John Deacon now wears sensible anoraks and grey trousers

Strolling near his London home holding a copy of the Daily Mail, the 64-year-old reclusive bass player looked a far cry from the flamboyantly-dressed figure who rose to fame with a band in the 1970s. Indeed, anyone passing this unassuming- looking gentleman in the street would probably fail to give him a second glance. And that's just the way he likes it. The mystery rock legend has seen his fortune grow by an estimated £20million in the past four years, partly due to the success of a West End musical on top of the lucrative royalties he receives from his hits.

EasyJet makes holidaymaker pay excess baggage to take his mother's belongings home after she suffered a stroke in Spain

EasyJet has come under fire for charging a customer more than £50 to take his mother's luggage home from Spain after she suffered a stroke.
Jeff Kimber had to fly back to Britain from Majorca alone, because his elderly mother Shirley was too ill to take a commercial flight even though she had a seat booked on the easyJet service.
When he checked in with two bags - one for his own belongings and one for his mother's - he was told he had to pay a ?78 charge because his luggage was too heavy.
The airline refused to waive the fee even when Mr Kimber, 40, pointed out that his insurance company had booked four tickets for the flight and he was only using one of them.
When he returned to Britain, he contacted the company to complain - but they told him it would be 'unfair' to bend their own rules by refunding the money.

Rugby World Cup 2015 kicks off as Royals join 82,000 England fans at Twickenham

Thousands of fans were on the edges of their seats at Twickenham tonight as they watched England triumph over Fiji in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. And the Duchess of Cambridge was no different. Dressed in a smart blue coat, the mother of two was remarkably animated (top left and top right) as she watched the tournament's opening game. At one point, she leaned back against her husband (bottom left) - who was viewing the game through a pair of black-framed glasses - with her mouth wide open. She later broke into a smile and applauded enthusiastically (bottom right) as England's Mike Brown scored the team's first try at Twickenham Stadium in London. Although England were made to work tirelessly against the underdogs, they managed to clinch their 35-11 victory with a late flourish.

Why we didn't go to our sister's funeral: The two surviving Beverley Sisters break nearly a decade's silence following sibling's death

Beverley Sisters break nearly a decade's silence following sibling's death

The Beverley Sisters spent their lives literally side by side, meaning the chasm left by Joy's death, aged 91, last month following a stroke is physical, palpable, writes FRANCES HARDY. Whenever they performed, gave interviews or appeared in public, the line-up was unchanging. On one side was Babs, on the other was Teddie, and in the middle, flanked by her younger twin siblings, Joy. No matter which hit it was - I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, How Much Is That Doggy In The Window? or their matchless signature tune Sisters - the formation did not vary: Teddie, Joy, Babs, that glorious combo, The Beverley Sisters.

Kate Winslet's body shape varies depending on the angle you look at her

There were some very opposing views of actress Kate Winslet at the Toronto Film Festival this week. On Monday night it was not her acting that divided opinion, but her rather splendid figure, clad in a Badgley Mischka figure-hugging ball gown, as those on two sides of the catwalk were afforded a completely different Kate to the gawpers across the way. Kate, like me, seems to have one of those bodies that appears to occupy three parts of the dress-size spectrum: a size 12 from the front (left), a size 10 from the side (centre) and a size 14 from behind (right), writes JULIA LAWRENCE.

Heartbreak as bright and bubbly 11-month-old baby boy dies from meningitis just 30 hours

Little Alex Patterson died at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge on April 13, just 30 hours after he first began to show signs of being ill. After a day playing in the park with his parents Sam and Jim, and big brother Callum, right, Alex began to be sick. At around 10pm, his parents noticed a few spots on his skin. Mr Patterson immediately ran a glass over the spots and they failed to disappear - a sign of meningitis. Alex was rushed to hospital where medics diagnosed him with meningitis B. His mother said: 'We called an ambulance and told them we suspected meningitis. But even at that point I didn't actually believe Alex had meningitis, it is not something that happens to you...Meningitis is thankfully very rare,' she said. 'But it does happen and it has happened to us. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to protect children against this disease, this indiscriminate, cruel disease. I want to encourage every parent to take this opportunity, make sure your babies are vaccinated.'

Kylie may have found love with Joshua Sasse, 20 years her junior

Joshua Sasse, it seems, is more than capable of holding his own against Kylie's stellar line up of ex-lovers. Yet while Olivier Martinez was a Hollywood star, Michael Hutchence a bona fide rock god and Andres Velencoso an internationally famed model, young Master Sasse is, by comparison, all but unknown. But as he strolled through Chelsea this week, a protective arm around the Australian pop princess, it was with a self-confidence which belied his relative anonymity.

Nick: Victim or fantasist? Rape. Torture. Murders. These were the extraordinary claims made by one man against leading Establishment figures. Police called his story 'credible and true' but there's not a shred of evidence to back his allegations

'Nick' accuses leading Westminster Establishment figures of VIP pedophile ring

A special investigation looks into what is known about 'Nick' (pictured left), his connections to new deputy Labour leader Tom Watson, and suspicions about his VIP Westminster paedophile ring claims. One of the perpetrators he named was former Prime Minister Edward Heath (bottom right). Another was ex-Home Secretary Leon Brittan (top right). A third was Harvey Proctor (right, centre), once a Tory MP. But there are terrible ambiguities surrounding Nick's case that could now deter victims from coming forward and also damage trust in the forthcoming judge-led inquiry into historic allegations of child abuse. Senior officers at Scotland Yard are expected to face a grilling over the fiasco, which led to a murder investigation being opened without any bodies and without anyone knowing who it was that had actually been murdered.

Marine Sgt Alexander Blackman given longer sentence than killers and pedophiles

Mom of four-year-old girl who was thrown off a California cliff to her death by her FATHER

Cameron Brown was sentenced to life without parole today for first degree murder of his daughter Lauren Key. He threw her off a 120ft cliff because, it was argued, the former baggage handler didn't want to pay her mother $1,000 a month in child support. Lauren's mother, Sarah Key-Marer, broke down in tears as she told the court 'We are all so broken without her. Mr Brown - you will never take her memory from us,' she said directly to the murderer. She tells Daily Mail Online how she has coped with the pain of the past 15-year nightmare in an exclusive interview. 'I had such a bad feeling,' says Sarah of the day Brown had visitation. Brown always denied killing his daughter - but after three trials he was finally found guilty of the callous murder in May.
