For scientists have come up with a smartphone app that can turn on a robotic vacuum cleaner remotely – meaning you can clean your carpets even when you are not in the house.

Ground-breaking: Once a room is clean it will move on to the next one, with its low, flat shape meaning it can even clean under beds
Once a room is clean it will move on to the next one, with its low, flat shape meaning it can even clean under beds.
However those with more than one storey will have to decide which is most in need of a clean, for the £549 vacuum cannot go up and down stairs.
Left to its own devices, it will clean up to 5,000 square feet and functions for up to two hours before it takes itself back to its dock for charging.
As well as a smartphone it can also be programmed by a button on the vacuum.
The Neato BotVac Connected was revealed at a technology showcase in Mayfair, London, this week. It will go on sale at stores including Argos, Debenhams and Amazon from next month.
