1,100 jobs under threat at Auto Windscreens


Auto Windscreens, Britain's second largest suppliers of replacement car windows, has called in the administrators, putting 1,100 jobs at risk.

The Chesterfield-based firm, which produces 250,000 windscreens a year and has 550 mobile window repair units around the country, has suspended all operations.

Accountant Deloitte has been appointed joint administrator and customers are being advised to make alternative arrangements.

Deloitte said it was the loss of one big customer that pushed the company over the edge.

It is thought that arch rival Autoglass had won the account of a major carlease company.

The business, which was due to celebrate its 40th birthday this year, has suffered from delays in implementing a new IT system and a poor end to 2010.

Funding talks with banks folded when a creditor served a winding-up order on the firm, which was sold by insurer Aviva in 2008.
