Fraudsters exploit green initiatives

Fraudsters are ripping off multi-billion pound green initiatives because they are so poorly protected, said accountancy PricewaterhouseCoopers.

In what it termed 'a new frontier for fraud and market abuse', PwC said programmes such as the £73bn EU carbon emissions trading scheme were under attack from professional cyber criminals.

The problem has been highlighted by the recent closure of several national carbon trading systems after hackers used them to steal £38m from companies.

In a mock scam run by PwC to test one firm's security, up to 20% of employees clicked on a fake internet page that could have given criminals access to company data.
