But Mourinho said: 'We have to look like this: last season he played every minute but two seasons ago he didn't and three seasons ago even less. So what's the problem?

'He is a player who has my total confidence. I trust him always. He's one of my men. Because he's on the bench for one game or I take him off at half-time, what's the difference?'

'Will he start? I don't know. He was on the bench. And he is one of the good faces. The victory against Maccabi influenced the whole group, and he is one of the faces I liked more yesterday and today than before.'

Mourinho rejected comments from Steven Gerrard who claimed there was 'friction' between the Chelsea manager and his skipper.

'He said something that's not true,' he said. 'I don't have a problem with one of my players. You can try to find any answers for the bad results but bad relations between myself and one player or between the players? Go for another answer.

'Go for my bad options, bad changes, go for the bad weather. Go for what you want.

'When bad things in football happen the first thing is to find a dramatic story. Somebody punched someone, Diego Costa fought with John Terry and they brought a translator, because Diego doesn't speak English and John doesn't speak Spanish. They organise like the Wild West duels with a translator!

'The direction you don't go in is the direction that's real. You lose confidence, you fear the ball; you fear the worst. The good thing against Maccabi is that we wanted a good start and we did that. We missed a penalty and that moment was good because it was a fantastic reaction.'

'You need confidence to be better. In football when you lose matches you are affected. You can say you're not but you are.
