Matthew Skalitzky, 40, is accused of attacking and beheading his mother, Jane, 68, with a four foot sword after the pair shared breakfast

A mentally ill man attacked and beheaded his mom with a four foot sword just after having a family breakfast before telling police 'she's not my real mother', cops say.

Matthew Skalitzky, 40, from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, is accused of murdering mother Jane Skalitzky, 68, at his home on Friday morning.

According to police, Skalitzky had been staying overnight with Jane and father Joseph, sharing breakfast with them before Jane had agreed to drive him home.

Once they reached his townhouse, which he shared with another man, Skalitzky is reported to have gone upstairs to his room with her before launching the attack.

Cops say they spoke with Skalitzky's roommate, who said when the pair arrived on Friday morning Jane had been in good spirits and was 'being friendly and greeting him.'

However, Skalitzky had seemed 'distant and unemotional' before the pair went upstairs, according to Madison Newspapers.

Skalitzsky's roommate said he didn't hear anything for the next ten or 15 minutes, but then heard loud stamping noises coming through the floor.

When he went to go upstairs, he claims he heard Jane screaming 'no, no, no' before opening the door to Skalitzky's room and finding her headless body on the floor with wounds to her hands.

According to cops, Jane - a retired special needs teacher - had eaten breakfast with Skalitsky his her house before driving him home, at which point the alleged attack took place

The roommate said he then led Skalitzky, who was still holding the bloodied sword, downstairs 'like a child' before going to call cops.

When officers arrive the said they found Skalitzky on the stairs and asked whether he had killed his mom, to which he replied: 'Yes, but she's not my real mother'.

There is no currently indication that Skalitzsky was adopted.

His father also spoke to officers, saying Skalitzsky has seemed 'anxious and agitated' at breakfast earlier that morning, but added the attack still came as a 'shock' to him.

He also said Skalitzky had been on medications, though he didn't say what they had been prescribed for, and had recently stopped taking them after reading bad reviews online.

To his knowledge, Skalitzsky had started taking them again two days before the attack took place.

Skalitzky's father said his son had been on medications which he stopped taking, though restarted them several days before the attack (pictured, the house where the alleged attack took place)

Since his arrest Skalitzsky has been transferred to a mental health facility, where he remains.

Officers say that when they search Skalitzky's house, alongside the bloodied sword which they found on the porch, they also discovered a machete and a .380 semi-automatic pistol with a laser sight.

Jane's loved ones and former colleagues at a special education need school where she was a teacher for 30 years have since paid tribute, saying she is a 'tireless advocate' for her students and a caring friend.
