New trailer for season 12 of Grey's Anatomy could not be any cheerier in the wake of McDreamy's brutal death

It didn't take them long to get over Dr McDreamy.

The new trailer for season 12 of Grey's Anatomy has arrived, and it could not be any cheerier.

'You can stop counting the seconds, it's almost here,' a bordering-on parody voiceover declares before the irritatingly upbeat soundtrack kicks in.

'You are about to find out that everything has changed,' a female voice narrates.

The obvious big change to the Grey's roster is Derek Shepherd, who will not be coming back after being fatally T-boned by a truck in the final episodes of season 11.

Despite being one of the most popular and longest serving characters,  Shonda Rhimes - who is almost as notoriously unsentimental with her characters as Game Of Thrones writer George RR Martin - wrote him out of the show, reportedly after the two clashed.

To rub salt in the late Shepherd's considerable wounds, his wife and show protagonist Meredith Grey seems have gotten over it pretty quickly, even if she did have a few episode cushion at the end of season 11.

In the trailer we see her waking up in bed smiling - alone, at least - while an alarm buzzes beside her.

She runs downstairs, tripping over toys - possibly her own child's - as she races into the living room to find Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) smashing a hole in the wall with a sledgehammer.

On call: Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) return for season 12

'What the hell are you doing?' she bellows, amid the montage of smiles, laughs and high fives.

Even the tagline for season 12 is pretty saccharine: 'Let the sun shine.'

'It's the season premiere only Grey's can deliver,' the narrator gushes, before showing the only non-happy person in the 20 second trailer: the mystery blonde who gets punched in the face by Meredith's half sister Maggie.

Without Shepherd, just four original characters now remain: James Pickens Jr's Richard Webber, Chandra Wilson's Miranda Bailey; Justin Chambers' Alex Karev, and Grey herself, played by Ellen Pompeo.

Season 12 of Grey's Anatomy kick's off on ABC on September 24.
