Fifty shades of single! Dakota Johnson confirms split with Matthew Hitt on Ellen DeGeneres... but insists potential suitors love her or 'run for the hills'

Unlike her Fifty Shades Of Grey character, Dakota Johnson is no longer tied down.

The 25-year-old actress confirmed that she is single during an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show which is set to air on Friday.

Many have speculated on her relationship status as she has not been spotted out with on/off boyfriend Matthew Hitt for almost three months.

While talking about her famous portrayal of Anastasia Steele, the 57-year-old comedienne asked the pretty brunette: 'Are you in a relationship?'

Dakota replied 'no' with seemingly a bit of hesitation and nervous laughter. 

Ellen furthered her questioning as she said: 'So is it harder for guys, are guys scared of you? Or do you notice a difference in guys approaching or not approaching you?'

Dakota joked: 'You mean like when they run away from me?'

The wife of Portia De Rossi then queried if more people are attracted to or scared of her at a party to which the young actress replied: 'I don't know... I guess that if those are the two options, I guess they're scared of me. They either love me or they're running for the hills.' 

The 21 Jump Street actress and Matthew dated for several months before a reported split in February, but briefly rekindled their romance in May.

Dakota and the Drowners frontman were last seen making a coffee run on June 29 in New York, but were said to have split after dating for six months because of her newfound Fifty Shades Of Grey fame. 

As for the highly-anticipated sequel, Fifty Shades Darker, Dakota told the chat show host filming begins 'sometime in the new year'.

The brunette beauty, who wore a cute brown leather sleeveless mini dress, insists that both her famous parents actress Melanie Griffith and actor Don Johnson have yet to see the film in addition to the rest of her family.

The racy role has not stopped her from getting into awkward situations, however, as she recalled a recent taxi ride.

She explained: 'Like, I was in a cab recently, and the driver was like, "My wife and I, we saw your film. We really liked it." And he goes, "I thought there could be more sex."'

Dakota could next be seen starring in Black Mass, which is a biographical drama centred around real-life criminal Whitey Bulger.

In the flick, she stars alongside a star-studded cast including Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard, Corey Stoll and Adam Scott.

Scott Cooper, known for his work on Crazy Heart, helmed the film. Black Mass is out now in the US with the UK debut to happen on October 11 as part of the London Film Festival.
