Not so hard core! Vince Vaughn shows hint of portly stomach as he leaves a gym with a female pal ahead of filming Mel Gibson's new movie Hacksaw Ridge in Sydney

He's received mixed reviews for series two of True Detective, but that hasn't dampened Vince Vaughn's spirits.

The 45-year-old actor was spotted in Sydney's exclusive suburb of Double Bay on Thursday after working out at the gym.

Appearing exhausted from an invigorating session, the star strode down the busy sidewalk with a female pal clutching a bottle of water and towel in hand.

It's no surprise Vince is using his down time to pump some iron - he's in Australia to film Mel Gibson's new movie Hacksaw Ridge with the likes of buff-bodied Australian actor Sam Worthington.

Vince is set to play the supporting role of Sgt Howell in the American war drama, a character who is tasked with training his soldiers with a no-excuses attitude.

The lead role has been snatched by Spiderman heartthrob Andrew Garfield, who is set to play Desmond Doss, a heroic fighter who fought in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II.

The film, which is based on a true story, is set to be released in 2016.

Typically a comedic actor, Vaughn surprised fans when he was cast in season two of HBO's hit crime thriller series True Detective earlier this year.

Fans and critics have had less than raving responses to Vaughn's portrayal of Frank Semyon, a struggling crime don in the fictional East L.A. Vinci.

The towering actor has since continued to break free from his comedic pigeonhole, appearing in a serious role in the thriller Term Life.

The film tells the story of a criminal, who is the target of several hitmen, struggling to stay alive long for his insurance policy to activate, therefore allowing him to transfer the money to his estranged daughter (Hailee Steinfeld).

Vaughn is joined in the film by his Swingers co-star Jon Favreau, Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson.
