Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal PLAYER RATINGS: Cesc Fabregas shines against his former club but Santi Cazorla has a day to forget at Stamford Bridge
- Chelsea defeated their London rivals Arsenal 2-0 at Stamford Bridge
- Playmaker Cesc Fabregas (8.5) was the hero for Jose Mourinho's side
- Gabriel (4) and (5) Santi Cazorla were the villains for the visiting Gunners
Jose Mourinho once again got the better of his nemesis Arsene Wenger in the Premier League but the Cesc Fabregas stole the show for the home side, while his Spanish counterpart Santi Cazorla struggled.
The Gunners ended the game with nine-men after Gabriel and Cazorla were given their marching orders, but it was a bad day all-round for the visitors.
Goals from Kurt Zouma and Eden Hazard sealed the tie for Mourinho's men as they picked up their second league win of the season.
Cesc Fabregas was one of Chelsea's stand out performers during the clash at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea (4-2-3-1)
Asmir Begovic – Had to be alert with Theo Walcott forever making runs and did little wrong. Denied Aaron Ramsey a consolation goal in stoppage time. 6.5
Branislav Ivanovic – Kept his place and was handed captain’s armband. Gave away needless free-kicks in dangerous positions, but put up a better fight than he has done previously this season. 6.5
Kurt Zouma – Superb tackle to stop Theo Walcott as the Arsenal striker looked through shortly before half time. Scored the opener. Chelsea star in the making. 8
Kurt Zouma scored Chelsea's goal of the game with a stooping header past Petr Cech
The Frenchman rose at the backpost to nod past the former Blues goalkeeper
Gary Cahill – Started ahead of John Terry. Did all that was asked of him by thwarting Arsenal attacks. He and Zouma showed plenty of chemistry as a centre back pairing. 7.5
Cesar Azpilicueta – Handled a lively Aaron Ramsey in the first half and was energetic down the left wing throughout, causing problems for Arsenal. 7
Cesc Fabregas – Outstanding in attack and almost set Pedro up for the opener with an inch-perfect ball over the top. Dictated play and assisted Zouma’s header with a dipping cross. 8.5
The Spaniard caused Arsenal all sorts of problems and provided the assist for the first goal
Nemanja Matic – Reunited with his partner Fabregas. Occasionally lost the midfield battle to Francis Coquelin in first half but did a thankless job in defensive midfield. 6.5
Pedro – Got behind and could have scored the opener were it not for Petr Cech rushing out. Forever looking to get on the ball. 6.5
Oscar – Replaced the injured Willian in the No 10 role. Roughed up but held his own. Standing ovation when replaced by Ramires in the 69th minute as Jose Mourinho may have worried a second yellow card could follow. 6.5
Eden Hazard – Livelier than he has been in their previous five games. Had his chances to double Chelsea’s lead and looked like he was having fun. Deflected goal but he won’t care. 7
Hazard sealed the tie with a deflected finish as Chelsea claimed their second win of the season
Diego Costa – A wind-up merchant. More interested in scrapping than scoring this season. Slapped Laurent Koscielny then squared up to the defender – but got Gabriel sent off in the aftermath. 7.5
Substitutes
Ramires (for Oscar, 69) – 6
Remy (for Costa, 81)
Mikel (for Fabregas, 90)
Diego Costa spent most of the time winding up Arsenal players but he caused a problem
Jose Mourinho got one over on his enemy Arsene Wenger but had the red cards to thank
Manager
Jose Mourinho – Set his team up to pile the pressure on from the offset. Job made easier by the sending off – will have to send Costa a thank-you card. Straightforward in the end. 6.5
Arsenal (4-2-3-1)
Petr Cech – First return to Stamford Bridge. Quick off his line to smother a first-half chance for Pedro. Helpless for unmarked Zouma’s free header and Hazard’s deflected goal. 7
Nacho Monreal – Put under early pressure as Chelsea pressed high but coped with that well. Different story after Arsenal were reduced to 10 and nine men. 6
Gabriel – Hook, line and sinker. Tensions boiled over after Costa squared up to Koscielny, and his blatant kick out at the striker was under the referee’s nose. Cost Arsenal the game. 4
Petr Cech made his first return to Stamford Bridge after leaving the club in the summer
Gabriel had to restrained by his team-mates following his clash with Costa
Laurent Koscielny – Never easy to defend against Costa and was given a slap or two to the face for his troubles. Marking for Zouma’s opener was non-existent but he was without his centre back partner, after all. 6.5
Hector Bellerin – Continually tried to feed Theo Walcott and contributed in attack on the right wing. Always up against it after the sending offs. 6
Francis Coquelin – A powerhouse in defensive midfield. Picked up a knee injury after 21 minutes but was determined to carry on. Unlucky to be sacrificed for Calum Chambers at half time. 6.5
Laurent Koscielny was involved in the original incident which saw Gabriel sent off
Santi Cazorla – Captained Arsenal but was sloppy in possession in the opening half. Received yellow for a cynical foul on Pedro then another for a late tackle on Fabregas. 5
Alexis Sanchez – Plenty tricks and skills. Tried to make life difficult for Chelsea, even after Arsenal had Gabriel sent off. Replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after 75 minutes. 6.5
Mesut Ozil – Anonymous in the first half. More so in the second. Body language was all wrong. Replaced by Olivier Giroud as Arsenal chased the equaliser. 5.5
Santi Cazorla had a shocker for Arsenal and was sent off for two bookable offences
Aaron Ramsey – Tidied up in midfield in the opening half. Tried to keep Arsenal’s attack alive in the second half but was often smothered by defenders. Almost got a consolation goal in stoppage time. 6.5
Theo Walcott – Earned his place as the starting striker. Constantly on the shoulder of the last man, using his pace to get behind. Thankless and isolated job after the sending offs. 7
Substitutes
Calum Chambers (for Coquelin, 45) – Brought on for the second half after Gabriel’s sending off. Unlucky that his deflection led to Chelsea’s second goal. 6
Theo Walcott caused Chelsea problems by running in behind but found himself isolated
Olivier Giroud (for Ozil, 75)
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (for Sanchez, 75)
Manager
Arsene Wenger – Arsenal were on the back foot in the first half but handled it well. Gabriel’s sending off meant Wenger’s game plan went out the window. Even more so after Cazorla saw red too. 6
Referee
Mike Dean – Could have handled Costa’s battles with Arsenal’s defence better, though had no choice but to send off Gabriel for his pointless kick. Struggled to keep a lid on hostilities at times. 6
Wenger will be angry with the final result but the two sending offs made the difference
