Jordan Henderson has suffered a devastating blow and is facing up two months out after breaking his foot in training.

Liverpool's captain had been absent since coming off in the second game of the season against Bournemouth but had been hoping to return to action in Sunday's Anfield clash with Norwich City, having been given the all-clear to resume training following a successful procedure in New York on Tuesday to treat a persistent problem in his left heel.

But in a cruel twist of fate, Henderson broke a bone in his right foot during a session at Melwood on Friday.

It was a freak accident and not inflicted by a heavy challenge from one of his team-mates but the damage is such that he will now require an operation early next week - most likely on Monday - to begin the healing process. It is completely unrelated to the issue with his heel.

Henderson, who had been desperate to get back into action, will be heartbroken by this latest setback and could now miss Liverpool's next 12 games, a sequence which includes trips to Everton, Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea.

There is also the added frustration of being ruled out of the England squad for the final Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania, as well as the glamour friendly in Spain at the beginning of November.

It is by far the biggest lay-off with which Henderson has had to contend during his career but he is not the type of character to dwell on the disappointment.

His ambition will be to get back into contention for a first team recall within six weeks - the shortest possible recovery time for an injury of this nature - rather than considering the worst case scenario.

James Milner will now continue as captain but there is no question Brendan Rodgers will miss Henderson.

Rodgers said at his press conference on Friday: 'Jordan will train today so will see how comes through it. He had some work done on foot so hopefully all will be well, assess over next 48 hours.'
