First impressions last and these hotels make spectacular ones, wasting no time at all in giving guests the wow factor from the off with incredible lobbies.

One of the most breathtaking is that of the Bellagio in Las Vegas, which has a mesmerising ceiling covered with 2,000 hand-blown glass blossoms in myriad hues.

Then there are the intricate tiles, spiral staircases and shining chandeliers at The Reverie in Saigon and Palazzo Parigi in Milan.

Other hotels make a splash with amazing water features. As you enter the reception at Jumeirah's Burj Al Arab in Dubai you are dazzled by a sea of fountains and gold leaf while the lobby in the Radisson Blu hotel in Berlin boasts a one-million-litre, 82ft-high aquarium.

The Shambala Game Reserve in Vaalwater, South Africa, meanwhile, is constructed in traditional Zulu style, with the lobby made from natural materials and decorated with wood carvings. And Hotel Jerome in Aspen impresses with its quirky opulence.
