Schmoozing is a way of life in Hollywood, but on Friday night, schmoozing came with serious consequences.

Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder got up close and personal with a new pal at Heifer International's Annual Beyond Hunger Gala - but like a lot in Tinsel Town there was no guarantee he would play nice.

The couple risked getting spat on as they were joined on the red carpet by Lucky the Llama at the Montage in Beverly Hills, California.

Fortunately for the finely dress pair, their new furry friend decided to be on his best behaviour and obliged them with a few photographs.

Perhaps the animal knew the important nature of the event - Heifer International is a nonprofit working to end poverty and hunger through community development - so thought it best to be supportive and not spit.

For the gala, Nikki wowed on the red carpet - or in this case green carpet - by skipping a gown in favour of a jumpsuit.

The 27-year-old's one piece featured a subtly sexy lace panel at the front with a lace edging across the bustline.
