  • United landed back from Holland after losing 2-1 at PSV on Tuesday
  • Defeat was made worse with the news that Luke Shaw broke his right leg
  • Shaw is still in Holland as he begins his long road to recovery from injury

It was a solemn return to England for Louis van Gaal and his Manchester United squad after a nightmare Tuesday night in Eindhoven.

Van Gaal and his stars were in a downbeat mood as they arrived back at Manchester Airport on Wednesday afternoon following their 2-1 Champions League group stage defeat at PSV.

Despite leaving the Philips Stadion empty-handed, the Dutchman still afforded the time to acknowledge Old Trafford supporters who greeted them upon their arrival back in north west England.

While Van Gaal could afford to raise a smile with the latter, the same couldn't be said for the majority of his players who cut forlorn figures.

Spanish duo Juan Mata and Ander Herrera were among those crestfallen with £36million summer signing Anthony Martial in a similarly pensive mood.

United goalscorer on Tuesday, Memphis Depay was also seen arriving back at Manchester airport as too Daley Blind - who signed autographs for supporters.

But despite the defeat, the Red Devils thoughts would have been with exciting left back Luke Shaw after he broke his right leg during the first half against PSV following a lunging tackle from their defender Hector Moreno.

Shaw has since undergone surgery for the horrific double leg break he suffered in Eindhoven and will be out of action for up to six months.

The 20-year-old had an operation at the St Anna Ziekenhuis hospital on the outskirts of the city in the early hours of Wednesday morning and will spend the next couple of days in Holland before he is allowed to fly home.

It is understood that the England defender suffered a clean break and could return before the end of the season, raising hopes that he will be fit for Euro 2016 next summer.

On Shaw's injury a United club statement read: 'Luke underwent surgery for his injury last night and will remain in hospital in Eindhoven to continue his early recovery.

'Manchester United are grateful for the excellent care he is receiving and would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support. A further update will be provided in due course.'

Van Gaal attempted to comfort Shaw as he was carried down the tunnel on the stretcher and revealed after the game that the defender was in tears after the injury.

'It is awful. A boy who came to Manchester United at 18, had a difficult time and then plays fantastic in his second season. Then, it happens like this.

'When he came into the dressing room, I couldn't say anything to him because he had on an oxygen mask, and he was crying.

'I am not a doctor so I can not say how long he will be out but when you have a double fracture I think it is six months, it depends how it develops. He won't play in the (Champions League) group phase any more. I hope he can play this season.'
