Semi truck with 37 undocumented immigrants crammed inside is found near a Texas gas station

A semi truck filled with 37 undocumented immigrants was stopped near a gas station in Texas on Friday afternoon, according to US Border Patrol.

The truck was travelling on I-35 just north of Pearsall, southwest of San Antonio, at about 4pm on Friday.

The 37 people were locked in the back of the big rig. After being released they were taken to local hospitals in an unknown condition.

After the immigrants were taken to local hospitals and the truck was towed away, several empty water bottles were seen strewn across the area

Information including the undocumented immigrants' ages and which countries they are from has not been released. 

Immigration officials could not confirm if the truck driver was arrested, according to FOX San Antonio.

Homeland Security is conducting a human-smuggling investigation surrounding the incident.  

It is unknown what tipped authorities off to the illegal transport, KENS 5 reported. 

Border Patrol released a statement to CBS News on Friday following the incident. 

The statement read: 'On September 18, at around 4pm, Cotulla Border Patrol Station received a call for assistance from Frio County Sheriffs Office regarding a concerned citizen call they received of several people locked inside a tractor trailer near a gas station on HWY 57 and 35. 

'Upon arrival to the scene, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Cotulla Station assisted Frio County Sheriff's Deputies in taking custody of the people. 

'A total of 37 undocumented aliens were located inside the trailer. EMS was requested and transported the people to several area hospitals for medical treatment. 

The case is currently under investigation by Homeland Security Investigation.'
