A policeman in a helicopter fatally shot a suspected burglar who was leading cops on a 100mph car chase, causing the man to crash into another car and injuring three people.

Officers said they tried to stop the suspect in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon but he fled, leading them on a car chase through San Bernadino and on to the 215 Freeway.

Cops say they decided to open fire after the man took a U-turn and began driving up the wrong side of the road, at which point he jumped out of his vehicle.

The car, a gray Chevrolet Yukon, kept going before hitting a Dodge Durango coming the other way with three passengers inside, all of whom had to be taken to hospital, according to KTLA.

One was listed in critical condition and two were in fair condition, KABC-TV reported. 

The suspect is reported to have stumbled alongside the highway until he collapsed near an overpass, dying at the scene.

While she admitted she couldn't remember the last time a suspect had been shot from a helicopter, she said officers were trained and prepared to do so.

Images from TV helicopters at the scene showed multiple bullet holes in the car's bonnet and roof, along with two in the window, one on the driver's side at head height.

The front of both cars involved in the crash had severe damage to their front ends, with pieces scattered across the freeway.

As a result, all lanes of the 215 were closed northbound yesterday for several hours before being reopened.
