  • Nelson was struck in the head by a line drive during Thursday evening’s game at Miller Park
  • He fell to the ground face down and where he remained for about a minute
  • The ball struck him on the right side of the back of his head
  • Nelson walked off the field on his own but was taken to a hospital where he underwent a CT scan

Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson was taken to the hospital Thursday after he was hit in the head by a line drive on the mound and spent a second night under observation on Friday.

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said there are no indications at this point that Nelson sustained a concussion.

'It's precautionary. They just want to make sure everything is 100 percent before he walks out the door,' Counsell said.

Nelson was struck in the back of the head Thursday night by a liner hit by Tommy Pham of the St. Louis Cardinals. Nelson was face down on the mound for about a minute before walking off the field.

Nelson didn't have enough time to react, and was hit on the right side of his head. Pham reacted immediately, visibly wincing once he realized what happened. He would make it second base on the play, but quickly buried his head into his hands as Nelson laid on the ground.Team trainer and manager Craig Counsell arrived at the mound shortly after the play was over.

Nelson laid on the ground for quite some time, but was eventually able to sit up on his knees.

Trainers continued to examine Nelson as he knelt on the field. After a couple more minutes, Nelson was able to walk off the field under his own power.

A CT scan showed a contusion.

'I think we're fortunate here. From what we saw, it's a good result. We're lucky and thankful that's all it is,' Counsell said before the Brewers played Cincinnati.

Counsell spoke with Nelson on Friday and said the pitcher is 'raring to go.'

Nelson wants to make his next start on Tuesday in Chicago against the Cubs, Counsell said.

'I think we need to wait about 48 hours. We need to give him a little bit more time,' he said.

Nonetheless, Counsell is confident that Nelson will pitch again this season and doesn't expect the accident to affect the right-hander's confidence.

'I'm not worried about the mental part of it at all,' Counsell said.
