GIRL ABOUT TOWN: Miranda snubs midwives as a new career is born

She attracted a new generation of fans in her role as frumpy but loveable Chummy in the BBC hit Call The Midwife. But Miranda Hart won’t be returning for the fifth series – as she pursues a new career in Hollywood.

There has been no announcement, but with six of eight episodes already filmed, Miranda is yet to show up on set, and doesn’t appear in scripts.

The 42-year-old actress wasn’t present for the recent filming of the Christmas special either, and though I’m told there’s a small chance she will have a cameo in the final two episodes, the BBC could not confirm that, and nor could her agent.

Miranda has already starred in one big-budget movie – Spy, alongside Jude Law – and has admitted that she is keen to break America. If only she’d given us all some warning!

All is not well on the set of the third Bridget Jones film, with creator Helen Fielding staying away to avoid star Renee Zellweger.

Any hopes of a thaw in the iciness that has existed between them since they posed seemingly happily, above, for the second film’s premiere in 2004, appear to have been dashed.

I wonder if Helen, 57, cut ties with the actress, 46, after she unveiled a dramatic new look last year that barely resembled her beloved Bridget.
