They were married from 1985 to 1988 but have remained close over the years.

And Monty Brinson has stuck by his troubled ex-wife Kim Richard's side, taking to Instagram on Saturday to shower her with kind words as she celebrated her 51st birthday.

'Wishing @kimrichards11 a beautiful birthday today, with all your wishes for today and the future come through. It's been a rough year for you my friend but I'm so proud of you how far you have come through this journey,' he wrote with a throwback snap of the two kissing on a couch.

He contined: 'I see all this brightness and happiness in your life ahead of you. You know in your heart I will always be there for you whether I'm here or some place far away.

'Besides today being your bday you should treat yourself each day as it was your bday. This world is a better place with you in it.'

Monty went on to explain how he chose that picture, because life was 'simpler' then.

He concluded, 'It's your life and live it to the fullest with brightness and happiness. Always love your friend Monty see you tomorrow night to celebrate your life.'

The pair have a 29-year-old daughter Brooke together, and Monty has been one of Kim's most staunch supporters since she allegedly attempted to steal over $600 worth of merchandise from the Van Nuys Target in California at the beginning of August.

He revealed the pair have not seen each other since the incident but speak on the phone everyday.

Kim, 50, was arrested for theft on August 2, and according to the incident report, which TMZ published, she had tried to steal two carts full of goods prior to her arrest.

Kim also most recently tried to get hold of the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, according to TMZ on Monday.

The star allegedly visited one smoke shop in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles three times during the past week in an effort to get some pills, the website said.

The former Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills star also agreed a plea deal with prosecutors following her April 16 arrest at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Monday.

The deal offered by the LA County District Attorney stipulated she serve three years probation, take 52 AA classes, complete 30 days of community labor and stay 100 yards away from the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Her attorney has asked that the blonde former child actress get community service instead of labor at an August 31 hearing at which Richards was not present.

The mother-of-four had claimed a foot injury made it impossible for her to do the more manual labor such as graffiti removal or freeway trash pickup.

She has been seeking treatment for substance abuse issues since her arrest that followed a drunken altercation with hotel staff and police officers.

The reality TV star was taken to jail and cited with public intoxication, trespassing, resisting arrest, and battery on a police officer.

On August 2, Richards was arrested for allegedly shoplifting close to $600 from a Target store in Los Angeles. She spent the night in jail before posting a $5,000 bail, according to People magazine.

She was axed from the Bravo reality show as a result of her legal and addiction woes but her younger sister Kyle Richards, 46, continues to be a part of the cast and is currently filming the new season of the series.
