  • He has reportedly provided evidence he was not alone with two men who made separate allegations against him
  • Detectives swooped on his Berkshire home in a blaze of publicity last year
  • He vigorously denies allegations describing claims as 'absurd and untrue'

Police have dropped an investigation into one sex abuse allegation made against Sir Cliff Richard, it has been claimed.

Detectives have reportedly failed to uncover evidence to back up an allegation made against the 75-year-old millionaire who vigorously denies claims made against him.

The veteran pop star is also said to have handed over evidence to police that he was never alone with two men who claim he assaulted them during the 1980s.

It raises the prospect that the 13-month police probe will come to an end as the millionaire singer prepares for an eagerly awaited return to live performing, the Sunday Times reports.

News of one of the investigations being dropped was unveiled by a close friend of Sir Cliff, who has described allegations made against him as 'absurd and untrue'.

Yorkshire Police and representatives for the star have not commented on the developments.

Sir Cliff was on holiday in Portugal in August last year when police swooped on his £3million Berkshire home in a blaze of publicity. The BBC beamed live TV images of detectives rifling through the singer's belongings.

Later that month, he flew back to the UK voluntarily to be questioned by detectives.

In February, Sir Cliff said he had no idea who his accusers were and hit out at police for refusing to disclose details to him. 'I have never, in my life, assaulted anyone and I remain confident that the truth will prevail,' he said.

'I have cooperated fully with the police, and will, of course, continue to do so... the allegations are completely false.'

His comments came after it emerged that two new alleged victims had come forward to claim they were molested as boys.

When the singer's home was raided last year detectives were investigating an allegation of sexual assault on a teenage boy at a Billy Graham Christian rally in 1985.

The Sunday Times reports a friend of the star as saying that Sir Cliff was accompanied by a number of minders and staff throughout the event and that some of them have signed affidavits to back his claims that he was never alone.

The friend has reportedly claimed that officers have found inconsistencies in the description given by Sir Cliff's accuser of the Sheffield rally.

The singer was the subject of a second allegation made by a man who said he was involved in making a music video with him in 1981.

But Sir Cliff is also said to have handed police evidence that he was never alone during the production.

It comes as Sir Cliff prepares for a month-long tour to celebrate his 75th birthday in October.

Concert dates – including those in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow – sold out within hours, encouraging Sir Cliff’s team to add another date to London’s Royal Albert Hall, where he wraps up with a six-night run, finishing on October 18. He has also been recording a new album in Nashville.

His representatives declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline this morning.
