But after she accepted his proposal, he had to break it to her gently that she would have to delay planning the wedding because of the World Cup.

‘Eliza was very understanding about waiting until 2016,’ Brown told the Daily Mail previously. ‘Obviously, with the World Cup training camp and the need to get rest, it would have been quite difficult to fit in a wedding.

‘I didn’t delay it to impress anyone. I did it for myself and what I want to achieve. I want to play in a World Cup. I’ve never done that before. I want to do well.

‘As a team we have a realistic chance of winning it, and being in our home country makes it all the more special. Anything I can do to put myself in the best position, I intend to do.’

The player added, smiling: ‘It also gives Tony [his future father-in-law] time to save up, which as you can see he’s very happy about.’

For his part, Mr Woodcock believes Brown’s ability to cope with his ‘feisty’ daughter has prepared him well for the rugby field.

‘If Mike can handle her we’ll be OK against the All Blacks,’ he said. ‘I said as much to [England head coach] Stuart Lancaster. He found that funny.’

FANS HIT BY TRANSPORT CHAOS

The creaking transport system struggled to cope with the influx of rugby fans at the weekend.

Crowds of supporters caused chaos on railways with a knock-on effect on some roads. First Great Western apologised for underestimating the number travelling to Cardiff for the Ireland v Canada clash. It led to severe overcrowding at London’s Paddington and queues at Bristol Parkway where packed trains passed without stopping.

Passengers branded the failure ‘unforgivable’. One mockingly wrote on Twitter: ‘Only 4 years notice!’

FGW said it would review arrangements for future World Cup events.

Under a moody photo of her fiance wearing a suit emblazoned with the England rose, she wrote: ‘So handsome!’

Brown scored two tries in England's opener against Fiji and was man of the match, earning him the title Magic Mike from many commentators.

The England star, who has also been given the nickname of ‘Mr Angry’ by his team-mates for his no-nonsense attitude, admits that the couple have a shared love of fashion and regularly go shopping together.

‘I like to dress in nice clothes, and I like a bit of shopping,’ he said in a previous interview. ‘It’s probably not the right man-thing to say - but Becks [David Beckham] would understand.

‘It’s great she has work I can get involved in and support her just as she supports me. She’s been great. Obviously there are good times but she’s the one I came home to in a grump for being overlooked [by England for] so many years.’

The full back used Twitter to thank the supporters at Twickenham who gave the England team a rousing reception on Friday night.

He wrote: ‘Tough opener against a very good, proud, physical Fijian team. Have to be happy with the win. Atmosphere was amazing, thank you. Appreciate all your support!!’
