James Spader looks cool in a Panama hat as he chats with co-star Paul Reubens on the NYC set of The Blacklist

Filming The Blacklist seemed to be little more than a day in the park on Friday.

The show's stars, 55-year-old James Spader and 32-year-old Megan Boone, were spotted on-set in a New York City park, filming a scene for the upcoming third season of the NBC crime drama.

Joining them for the action was one of the show's recurring guest stars, Paul Reubens - the 63-year-old actor best-known as his alter-ego, Pee-wee Herman.

In the scene, James' character of Raymond 'Red' Reddington alternated between sitting on a bench with Megan's Elizabeth Keen and standing to speak.

He had a casual demeanour throughout the scene, but the character of Red was still smartly dressed, from his beige fedora to his shiny brown shoes.

Red wore a brown jacket as a top layer on the cool day, only partially covering a grey, pin-striped waistcoat, a white dress shirt, and a silver tie.

Dark-coloured trousers finished off the character's clothing.

Paul's character of Mr. Vargas - a double agent in the employ of master criminal Red - opted to wear a grey suit, paired oddly with a deep violet turtleneck sweater.

Of the three characters, Liz was the most casual, covering her long, blonde hair with a grey baseball cap and otherwise opting for something of a biker look in black.

While the actors were all spotted smiling at times, it did seem to be something of a tense scene.

This would be appropriate considering the action that set up the third season - FBI agent Liz shot and killed the Attorney General in the season two finale and had to go on the run with Red.

Her new hairstyle and casual clothing on Friday indicated that she could very well still be a fugitive after a few episodes of season three.

Ready for anything: Dressed warmly and formally in a suit jacket and tie, Red could be up to anything in the scene

The Blacklist focuses on the character of Red, an internationally wanted criminal who turned himself in but insisted on only working with one member of the FBI, Liz.

With Red's help, a special task force has spent two seasons hunting down other bad guys.

Not quite Pee-wee: Although Paul spent most of the summer resurrecting his old Pee-wee Herman character for the upcoming movie, Pee-wee's Big Holiday, his Blacklist character did not resemble the funny man

As charming as he is dangerous, Red has long employed a vast network of shady types - like Mr. Vargas - to help him in his mission.

Paul's return to The Blacklist comes after a busy summer in which the actor resurrected his famous Pee-wee character for a Netflix movie, Pee-wee's Big Holiday.

Season three of The Blacklist will premiere on October 1.
