Yuk! Is that the Minister's idea of ear to the throne? Culture Secretary in hygiene faux pas as he picks his ear before shaking Duchess of Cambridge's hand

  • John Whittingdale met the Duchess of Cambridge at the opening ceremony for the Rugby World Cup at Twickenham Stadium
  • MP cleared his left ear of wax before inspecting his hand for evidence
  • Moments later he shook hands with the Duchess

She shakes thousands of hands during her Royal duties and, as a mother of two young children, is no doubt used to the occasional grubby finger.

But the Duchess of Cambridge may not have expected a hygiene faux pas of this magnitude when she met Culture Secretary John Whittingdale at the spectacular opening ceremony for the Rugby World Cup at London’s Twickenham Stadium.

Before their encounter, the Cabinet Minister, whose responsibilities include sport, appeared to use the little finger of his left hand to clear his left ear of wax.

Having removed his finger, he then inspected it intently for any evidence of offending material before rubbing it clean with his right hand.

A few moments later he offered the Duchess his right hand to shake as she greeted dignitaries in the stadium.

Which might explain her rather serious expression when talking to Prince William afterwards.

The 82,000 crowd then watched England trounce Fiji by 35 points to 11 in Friday’s first game of the tournament.

At the end of the match, Prince William and the Duchess was seen clapping with delight, while Prince Harry punched the air.

London mayor Boris Johnson was among the spectators, along with the Prime Minister, who may well be giving Mr Whittingdale an earful this morning....
