Sunny star! Mindy Kaling wears bright yellow to plant a kiss on Jon Stewart as she presents him with his final Emmy Award for The Daily Show

There are always a few actresses who choose to wear bright colours to awards shows like the Emmys, but Mindy Kaling may have outdone them all on Sunday.

The 36-year-old actress was impossible to miss both on the red carpet and on the stage in a sunshine-yellow dress.

Even giving Jon Stewart his final Daily Show Emmy Award could not detract from the stunning ensemble.

Fitting snugly over the Mindy Project star's curves, the yellow dress was designed by Salvador Perez.

Also a costume designer, Salvador earned The Mindy Project its first-ever Emmy nomination for Outstanding Costumes for a Contemporary Series this year.

The dress had a wide and rounded neckline and a high waist above a skirt that was fitted toward the top before falling in a train.

A sparkly gold belt was visible at the waist, while scattered sparkles of the same colour glinted just below the collar and on the dress' capped sleeves.

Canary-yellow jewellery from Neil Lane accented the outfit, as did the custom, gold-glitter clutch featuring Mindy's name and designed by Edie Parker.

Midway through the ceremony, Mindy hit the stage along with her co-presenter - 34-year-old actor Zachary Levi - to hand out the award for Outstanding Variety or Talk Series.

This was The Daily Show's third award of the night, with Mindy getting to hand an Emmy to retired host Jon.

It was the comedian's 22nd Emmy for the long-running comedy show - he retired from hosting earlier this year.

Even though she did not win any awards on Sunday night, life has been going well for Mindy in recent weeks.

The Mindy Project - which the actress created - began its fourth season on Tuesday when it premiered for the first time on Hulu.

On that same day, Mindy released her second book, Why Not Me?, a memoir and a sequel to the actress' 2011 best-seller, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns).

Busy Mindy returned to Los Angeles specifically for the awards show, leaving her national book tour and using the night to discuss The Mindy Project with her date and executive producer, Matt Warburton.
