SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: No oil painting! So why DID Rod buy it?

Belying his laddish image, Rod Stewart is a keen collector of Pre-Raphaelite art.

But a recent visitor to the singer’s home in Beverly Hills was drawn to a large oil painting given pride of place above the fireplace.

The stern subject of An Elegant Woman, by the 19th-century French artist Hippolyte Casimir Gourse, carries a very familiar countenance.

‘Don’t you think that one looks like me?’ Stewart asked his interlocutor. ‘You don’t have to answer; I know it does. It looks just like me when I was 18.’

And, as the picture here shows, he’s not wrong. A rebuke, certainly, for all those who said Stewart was no oil painting.

Most mothers would be thrilled by their daughters’ achievements, but screechy-voiced pop singer Paloma Faith has failed to impress hers.

‘She’s a political person: Left-wing, socialist and struggling a great deal with my success for that reason,’ says Paloma, who will be a coach on the new series of The Voice.

‘She was telling me the other day I should empty my bank account and give it all to a homeless charity.

‘I was, like: “It’d be a great publicity stunt, but then what?” ’

Dahl turns to Greece for new pup

Children’s author Roald Dahl was a renowned animal-lover, so it’s good to see his granddaughter Sophie continuing the legacy by adopting an abandoned dog.

The 38-year-old model and writer snubbed Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, where she adopted her moggie, in favour of a pup hailing from Greece.

‘I spent the afternoon at Heathrow yesterday, waiting with fast beating heart for this one,’ she wrote online. ‘Jojo, found roadside in a pile of rubbish, rescued, named and fostered and now adopted by Jamie Cullum and I.’

A spokesman for Battersea tells me: ‘We would always encourage people to help their local rescue centre.’

Pippa cosies up to Tory MP

Prince Charles is known for pestering MPs, but now it’s his daughter-in-law’s family who are cosying up to them.

Pippa Middleton had lunch in the Churchill Rooms at the House of Commons last week with Richard Benyon, the Tory MP in whose Berkshire constituency her parents’ £4.7 million home lies.

Benyon, Parliament’s richest member, says they were discussing a ‘charity issue’. His wife, Zoe, made the jewellery Pippa wore at the royal wedding.

She might be a famous Hollywood actress, but in this photo Goldie Hawn’s Golden Globe-winning daughter Kate Hudson seems desperate to prove she can be normal just like the rest of us.

The 36-year-old, who’s currently filming two pictures for release next year, posted this holiday snap on Instagram, in which the bikini-clad Kate tucks into cheese puffs straight from the bag and sups wine from a plastic cup.

Hardly the lifestyle of the rich and famous . . .

This must be her least convincing role.
