Diego Costa clashing with Gabriel is just the latest feud for fiery Chelsea striker... here's how he's battled rivals, including Sergio Ramos, Pablo Zabaleta and Gabriel (again)

  • Striker Diego Costa played a blinder in getting Gabriel sent off on Saturday
  • But the Chelsea man could still face action for his antics against Arsenal
  • It's certainly not the first time the fiery striker has overstepped the mark
  • Sportsmail looks at other times he's made headlines for the wrong reasons

Diego Costa is set to find out if the FA will take retrospective action for his part in the incident that led to Gabriel’s dismissal.

Costa was up to his old tricks as he got away with numerous challenges, arm swings, elbows and scratches as his Chelsea side Chelsea beat Arsenal.

But it's not the first time the striker has found himself in trouble... Sportsmail takes a look at other times the Spaniard as overstepped the mark.

Diego Costa will find out on Monday whether he will be punished for his antics in the lead up to Gabriel's red

Costa v Sergio Ramos and Pepe, Real Madrid 2012

Sergio Ramos and Pepe were played at their own game by Costa during the Madrid derby at the Bernabeu in 2012.

The Real Madrid duo are used to playing games and getting things their own way on the pitch – especially when playing at their own stomping ground.

But in Costa the duo met there match, with the Atletico man throwing his head, arms, shoulders and even his spit in their direction.

All three were up to their usual tricks, but come full-time they were all hugs and handshakes, showing fans what they already knew, it's all a game...

Costa v Gabriel, Villarreal 2013

It’s safe to say Costa and Arsenal defender Gabriel have history, and it’s entirely plausible that Saturday’s antics were directly linked to a head-to-head back in 2013.

During a game between Atletico Madrid and Villarreal, Costa appeared to push an elbow towards the Brazilian’s stomach at a corner.

And as unnecessary as it was, Gabriel’s reaction was worse with the big defender collapsing to the ground in a complete heap in his own box.

Costa v John Terry, Chelsea 2014

During his time at Atletico Madrid, Costa came up against, and squared up to, a future team-mate during a Champions League clash with Chelsea.

Costa chose John Terry as his nemesis during the first leg against the Blues at the Vicente Calderon just months before leaving Spain for Stamford Bridge.

Terry later played down the incident, saying he welcomed the Spanish international to the club.

Costa v Seamus Coleman, Everton 2014

It didn’t take long for Costa to ruffle some feathers following his arrival in the Premier League, in fact he annoyed Everton manager Roberto Martinez within a month of being in England.

Martinez claimed the striker needed to ‘understand the ethics’ of the English top flight following his antics during Chelsea’ 6-3 victory.

Costa scored twice but was disrespectful with his reaction towards Everton defender Seamus Coleman following an unfortunate own goal.

Costa v Pablo Zabaleta, Manchester City 2014

Pablo Zabaleta got a throttling from Costa when Chelsea travelled to Manchester early last season.

Costa felt a foul by the City right back was not a nice one and decided to get his own back by putting his hands around the defender’s throat.

Fortunately, City team-mates Fernandinho and Yaya Toure were on hand to pull Zabaleta away from the angry Spaniard.

It was Zabaleta's second yellow card of the game and he was subsequently sent off, while Costa remained on the pitch.

Costa v Jordan Henderson, Liverpool 2015

In January of this year, while most people in Great Britain were still pretending to live up to their ‘new year, new me’ motto, Costa was up to his old tricks.

Jordan Henderson was the opponent this time, with Costa and the Liverpool midfielder squaring up to each other in the first leg of a Capital One Cup tie.

Henderson later explained that he had taken exception to Costa trying to intimidate his younger team-mates during the clash at Anfield.

Costa v Emre Can and Martin Skrtel, Liverpool 2015

The second leg of Chelsea's clash with Liverpool was every bit as fiery.

Costa planted a stamp on the leg of German counterpart Emre Can as tempers flared at Stamford Bridge under the floodlights.

He also left a late leg in on Martin Skrtel and yet somehow managed to avoid a red card.

Unsurprisingly Can was none too happy with the challenge from Costa during the fiery clash in west London

Costa v Yohan Cabaye, Paris Saint-German 2015

Costa continued to provide controversy throughout his first season and even let his anger spill out into the Champions League.

He took a particular disliking to then Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Yohan Cabaye as the Blues were dumped out of the competition.

Costa v Gabriel, Arsenal 2015

Another big game and another big performance from Costa, just not one everybody agrees with.

Costa, having just connected with Laurent Koscielny's face with a couple of flailing arms and chested him to the ground, scratched Gabriel, had words with him and talked him into kicking out.

Gabriel was sent off for his troubles after falling for Costa's antics but the verdict on the Blues man is yet to come.
