Six line up in final race for the Tote

The government has whittled down those jostling to buy the Tote to a list of six from the 18 proposals that it received, a source close to the situation said.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport did not name them but they are tipped to include Betfred, Gala Coral and the Reuben brothers.

A consortium including former Ladbrokes boss Chris Bell is said to be out of the race.

The Tote was valued at £400m by PricewaterhouseCoopers three years ago but its price tag now is seen as closer to £200m.
