He also revealed that the password for the account is simply password1
Millions were watching the Emmys at the time and dozens tried to log in
Some got through but most couldn't as too many were using the account
Network's streaming service subscription usually costs $14.99 a month

$14.99 a month is, for many, too much to pay to watch HBO.

So Andy Samberg stepped in and shared his username and password for the network's online streaming service - live as he hosted the Emmys.

More than 16million people were expected to watch the awards show and all of them were given access to HBO Now by the comedy actor.

HBO CEO Richard Plepler has said previously that he does not mind people sharing their password because the number of people doing it 'isn't significant'.

Between awards at tonight's show at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, Samberg revealed his credentials.

He said: 'HBO has the most nominations tonight and I just realized that a lot of you watching it at home right now might not have an HBO subscription, but lucky for you, the CEO of HBO recently said he doesn't think password sharing for their streaming services is a problem.

'So, here's my HBO Now log-in. The user name is khaleesifan3@emmyhost.com, and the password is, of course, password1.'

His username is a reference to Game of Thrones - made by HBO - which has a character known as Khaleesi.

Dozens of people immediately tried to log in and were successful. However most could not get in to the account, getting either an incorrect username or password message or being told that too many devices were currently using the account.

Some people who made it through to the website immediately changed the personal details linked to the account.

Shortly after Samberg let slip his log-in details, HBO tweeted: 'Lucky for you, @AndySamberg is a very generous #Emmys host.'

Some thought the ploy may have been a ruse to get people to pay for HBO Now - which costs $14.99 a month and allows subscribers to stream TV shows through their computer.

When people tweeted their frustrations that Samberg's credentials did not work, the network responded by sending links explaining how to pay for the service.
