And the former Wales international admitted: "I'm up for that sort of scrap. I did it at Birmingham and I took on a similar role here."

According to a report in the News Of The World, Savage says he wants a move a s soon as possible, but insists there will be no re-run of the torturous final days he endured at Birmingham.

He is quoted by the paper as saying: "I went to see Mark Hughes when it started to become clear that my time at Rovers might be coming to an end and he was brilliant about it all, which is what I expected.

"I told him I needed to be playing every week and he knows me well enough to understand that I get myself in a right state if I'm not.

"I'm a big boy and understand that there's some great youngsters coming through at this club... everything moves on, it's a natural progression."

Sunderland are favourites to capture Savage, with boss Roy Keane lodging a £1million bid. Rovers are insisting on £1.5m, however.

Savage added: "I don't know where I'll be going. What matters is that it happens as quickly as possible because the season is going by and I want to be involved."
