Leicester 2-1 West Ham (AET): Andy King fires Foxes into Capital One Cup fourth round after Joe Dodoo's early strike is cancelled out by Mauro Zarate

  • Andy King scored in the second half of extra-time to put Leicester through to the Capital One Cup fourth round
  • West Ham keeper Adrian was outstanding, making a series of sensational saves after Joe Dodoo's opener
  • Dodoo scored in the sixth minute for Leicester, following up on his hat-trick against Bury in the previous round
  • The equaliser came from a terrific left-footed strike from Mauro Zarate in the 27th minute at King Power Stadium

Adrian was finally beaten again after 100 minutes of simply sensational stopping in West Ham’s goal as they exited the Capital One Cup in extra time against Leicester City.

At one stage of the additional time the Spaniard stood up from yet another lightning dive low to keep out an effort from substitute Jeffrey Schlupp and laughed.

But with four minutes remaining of the tie, that laughter turned to tears as Christian Fuchs crossed from deep and Andy King put the ball into the top left corner with his head. It was virtually the only place he could beat Adrian in that form.

Man of the match: Adrian

His manager Slaven Bilic said: ‘In extra time they had two situations one-on-one, clear cut, where he has done brilliantly. He kept us in the game. It was a good game, typical cup game; 120 minutes, very exciting and we are very disappointed.’

Youngster Joe Dodoo put one past Adrian with an early strike on six minutes to put the home side in front, but before and after Mauro Zarate levelled in the first-half, Adrian was at his best as he clawed his and West Ham’s way through this tie to stop Leicester’s onslaught with limb, toe and fingertip.

Dodoo continued from where he left off in the last round — scoring a hat-trick on his debut against Bury — by finding the net after only six minutes. A ball ricocheted towards the 20-year-old from the left with plenty of swerve but, nine yards from goal, he tamed it first-time into the bottom left corner, leaving Adrian no chance.

The visitors equalised against the run of play on 26 minutes when Zarate hit a shot which took a heavy deflection off Marcin Wasilewski, sending the ball inside Mark Schwarzer’s near post.

With the scores level, Adrian came to the fore. Leicester continued the second half with similar dominance to which they started the first.

Marc Albrighton powered an effort when the ball came out from a corner, but Adrian stopped with his leg and the West Ham goalkeeper was at full stretch diving low to his left to keep out Ulloa’s flicked header, using his fingertips, just after the hour.

In extra time, it went beyond a joke. Schlupp was through one-on-one, but Adrian used his body to save, then substitute Riyad Mahrez had a go with just the keeper to beat, but an outstretched leg denied him. Another substitute, N’Golo Kante, followed up but Tomkins was on the line to clear. Adrian was not far away and would surely have reached it had his team-mate not been there, it was that kind of night.

Even opposition manager Claudio Ranieri picked him as the stand-out player. ‘We create 10 clear chances to score but it is difficult to beat this goalkeeper, I think he’s man of the match,’ Ranieri said.

Schlupp continued his shooting practice, firing a low shot that went through West Ham’s defence and needed a sharp stop by Adrian. That was when the laughter came. But with penalties looming, King finally put the ball beyond him, 100 minutes after he had conceded the first.
