It was Mad Men's last hurrah at the 67th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday evening.

And while the series lost out on the night's top honour to Game Of Thrones, Jon Hamm finally won Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series, after eight years of being nominated.

The 44-year-old got a standing ovation as he was given his very first Emmy, and then crawled onto the stage where he appeared to thank his ex-girlfriend of 18 years Jennifer Westfeldt in a humble acceptance speech.

Before giving his gratitude to a woman named 'Jen', Jon said: 'There has been a mistake, clearly. Thank you for that. This is impossible - to be named with all of those extraordinary gentleman, it's impossible to be standing here, up here.

'It's impossible to have done this show with this incredible cast, with these incredible people, these incredible writers, incredible crew, the network and studio who put this on, Lionsgate and AMC, am I saying that right?

'And it's incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here, so I want to thank the people to whom I owe an incredible debt, people who in my life have gotten me here, families who have chosen for some reason to take me in and be nice to me along this strange, strange road.

While Jon has been up for eight consecutive years for Mad Men, he has also been nominated three times as a Guest Actor in 30 Rock.

Along with Jon, Viola Davis and Amy Schumer took home their very first Emmys, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus won for the fourth year in a row.

Viola gave a powerful speech as she accepted the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series prize for How To Get Away With Murder, which left Kerry Washington and Taraji P. Henson welling up with tears. She is the first black woman to ever win in the category.

'In my mind, I see a line. And over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me to get over that line but I can’t seem to get there no how. I can’t seem to get over that line,' she said. 'That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s. The only thing that separates women of colour from everyone else is opportunity.

'You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there, so here’s to all the writers - the awesome people. People who have redefined what it means to be beautiful to be sexy to be a leading woman – to be black. To the Taraji P. Hensons and the Kerry Washingtons, thank you for taking us over that line. Thank you to the Television Academy.'

Amy Schumer won for her funny acting, but she showed a more serious side on stage.

The comedian - who won Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for Inside Amy Schumer, blinked back tears as she delivered her unprepared acceptance speech.

Amy didn't miss out on cracking a few jokes however. 'Man, we all had to get Final Draft once they picked up our show – we didn’t own it,' she said. 'Thank you to my head writer who had a baby like 10 seconds ago. She got drunk and told me I had to make my dream show.

Just show off your arms in a jade strapless gown by Zac Posen

Amy Schumer may be one powerhouse funny gal but she doesn't look funny when it comes to hitting the red carpet. She stuns in a perfectly tailored custom made Zac Posen dress for the Emmy red carpet.

Zac Posen is no stranger to the red carpet and also dressed another celeb tonight at the Emmys. He counts A-list actresses like Christina Hendricks to super model Naomi Campbell as fans of his creations that always enhance a woman's curves and flatters their figures.

Sadly this exact dress is not available online but head over to Neiman Marcus to the right to pick up something by Zac Posen. If you're hankering for something that have that sleek siren vibe that Amy is doing tonight, check out our edit below. The one from ML Monique Lhuiller is a steal at over 50% off!

Pair yours with upswept hair like Amy and we would even throw on a dazzling necklace to draw even more attention to that sexy neckline.

Amy added: 'I’m so proud – this show fights for what we believe in. I want to think my sister Kim, who is the only reason I’m alive and breathing. Thank you so much!'

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was unsurprisingly named Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy for Veep. It's the fourth time in a row that the 54-year-old has taken home the honour, and her sixth Emmy to date. But Julia certainly wasn't any less thrilled.

"What a true honour it must be for you to honour me tonight,"' she teased, before adding: 'Oh I'm so sorry, Donald Trump said that – it’s getting trickier and trickier to satirise this stuff.'

Julia graciously thanked the other nominees in her category - which included Amy Poehler, who has been nominated six times for Parks And Recreation and never won.

'I love powerful funny women – I love you gals so much., I do in fact,' she said, also thanking her co-stars and joking that she has lost her eyesight.

And in a more shocking turn, it was Veep that took home Outstanding Comedy Series – a prize that has been won by Modern Family for the past five years. The show took home four prizes in total - the same as Game Of Thrones, while Olive Kitteridge was awarded six.

Uzo Aduba broke down in tears as she won Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series for her role as Crazy Eyes in Orange Is The New Black.

Her co-stars Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon gave her a standing ovation, and the 34-year-old only grew more emotional as the weight of her big win began to dawn on her during the acceptance speech.

Equally surprised to have his name read out was Peter Dinklage, who won Supporting Actor In A Drama Series for Game Of Thrones. This was the second win for Peter, who took home the title back in 2011 and has been nominated every year since.

'I wasn’t prepared at all - I was even chewing gum,' he admitted as he took to the stage, adding that he is 'still awed' by the performances of his fellow nominees - in particular Better Call Saul's Jonathan Banks.

'We’re only as good as our writers and I’m lucky enough to work with the greatest writers,' Peter said, before thanking George R. R. Martin and Lena Headey, his 'inspiration and scene partner'.
