  • He was speaking to a Radio Times writer about his new film The Intern
  • But the Oscar-winning actor, 72, took offence to her line of questioning

He is known for his tough guy roles and no-nonsense attitude but it appears Robert De Niro may finally have met his match after a reporter took exception to him trying to walk out of an interview.

The notoriously difficult interviewee was accused of being 'condescending' by Radio Times writer Emma Brockes after he took offence at her questions and became embroiled in a heated exchange.

He then walked out after telling her 'I'm not doing this, darling.'

Give autumn the cold shoulder in an asymmetric Rodarte dress like Anne

She plays a fashion E-Commerce CEO in the new movie Intern, and it looks like Anne Hathaway channeled her on screen character for the premiere of the film.

Making a dramatic entrance on the red carpet, Anne donned an asymmetric single sleeve gown featuring sequins, jewels, feathers and mesh paneling by Rodarte.

Sure, there’s a lot going on in this dress, but Anne’s savvy styling with side swept waves, a simple box clutch and barely there sandals lets the dress do all the talking so it doesn't look too OTT. And anyway, if you can’t dress up on the red carpet- then when can you? Our point exactly- go Anne!

Sadly this Fall 2015 Rodarte dress is no longer available to buy online, but click right to shop the current collection at Moda Operandi.

De Niro was being interviewed about his latest film The Intern, co-starring Anne Hathaway, and had been giving a few of his trademark monosyllabic replies before things turned ugly.

The Oscar-winning actor did not like it when Brockes asked him how he resisted the temptation to go into 'autopilot' on set, and was seemingly irked again when she suggested the Tribeca district of New York, where De Niro co-founded a film festival, had been taken over by bankers.

Brockes wrote in the Radio Times magazine that after the 72-year-old asked her to pause her recorder 'he then pops out of his chair, starts pacing madly and says he's cutting short the interview because of the "negative inference" of what I just said.'

When she replied: 'What, about the bankers?' he told her it was 'all the way through'.

Brockes defended her questioning, explaining that she had been interested by the acting methods he used, only for De Niro to reportedly reply: 'You're probably not even aware that you're doing it. The negative inference.'

The heated encounter continued before Brockes said De Niro told her: 'I'm not doing this, darling.'

After Emma Brockes asked Robert De Niro how he resisted the temptation to go into 'autopilot' on set, and later suggested the Tribeca district of New York, where he co-founded a film festival, had been taken over by bankers, the Oscar-winning actor said he was cutting short the interview. Citing her 'negative inference' as his justification, the exchange then went as follows...

Brockes: 'What, about the bankers?'

De Niro: 'All the way through. All the way through. Negative inference.'

Brockes: 'Er, like where else?'

De Niro: 'The whole way through and I'm not doing it. I'm not doing it, darling.'

De Niro: 'You're probably not even aware that you're doing it. The negative inference.'

Brockes: 'That's quite a presumption.'

De Niro: 'I'm a very good reader of character.'

Brockes: 'So am I.'

Brockes: 'Hang on. So where else am I being negative?'

De Niro: 'The question about being on autopilot - negative inference.'

Brockes: 'Wait but I asked that question to establish how it is you manage not to be on autopilot.'

De Niro: 'There's a negative inference.'

Brockes: 'I have to say, now that you're going on about it, it makes me think you were on autopilot and you're super-sensitive about it.'

De Niro: 'I'm not doing this, darling.'

Brockes: 'I think you're very condescending.'

De Niro: Oh, you think "darling" is condescending?'

It was a comment that did not sit well with his interviewer, who said: 'I think you're very condescending.'

He replied: 'Oh, you think "darling" is condescending?'

Brockes later told The Independent De Niro's hostility had caused her to lose control.

She said: 'I have sympathy with De Niro because nobody wants to be there for these choreographed junket interviews.

'I was expecting him to be a little quiet but the combination of hostility and condescension irritated me and I ended up losing my cool.

'I certainly didn’t go in looking for an argument but when it happened I did think "at least he’s finally saying something."'

The Intern sees De Niro move away from his tough guy roles to instead play Hathaway's assistant.

The film tells the story of Jules Ostin (Hathaway) the young founder of a fashion based e-commerce company who agrees to a community outreach program and hires senior citizen Ben Whittaker (De Niro) as an intern.

It is released in cinemas in the UK on October 2.
