Preston 2-2 Bournemouth (2-3 on pens): Adam Federici makes all the right moves in penalty shootout to edge Cherries through in Capital One Cup
- Bournemouth edged into the fourth round of the Capital One Cup with a penalty shootout victory over Preston
- Shaun MacDonald opened the scoring for The Cherries with a first half header
- Jordan Hugill forced the game into extra time with a late header for North End
- Marc Pugh restored Bournemouth's lead in the opening half of extra time
- Premier League side conceded a penalty in the dying minutes for Daniel Johnson to equalise
- Adam Federici made three saves to his right in the penalty shootout to edge his side into the next round
Goalkeeper Adam Federici was Bournemouth's penalty shoot-out hero as they finally overcame stubborn resistance from Championship strugglers Preston.
Federici made three brilliant saves - all to his right - from the spot to deny Jordan Hugill, Alan Browne and Daniel Johnson to break North End hearts after the home side had twice come from behind to force extra-time and then penalties.
It was a form of redemption for the big Aussie who last season was pilloried for his mistakes at Wembley that cost Reading an FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

'Feds is an outstanding goalkeeper and he has made some great saves to get us through,' said manager Eddie Howe.
'I had no doubts about signing him in the summer. He is an experienced international goalkeeper who we certainly believed in. And he is a great character.'
Federici was one of nine changes made by Howe from Bournemouth's Premier League game against Sunderland.
But it seemed to make little difference as they took a deserved lead from Shaun MacDonald's header after 23 minutes.
Preston are 22nd in their division but beat Watford in the last round at Deepdale. They never gave up and levelled after 85 minutes when substitute Jordan Hugill headed in Greg Cunningham's cross.
Bournemouth restored their advantage after 96 minutes when Marc Pugh converted from close range but his fortunes then changed when he handled allowing Johnson to level with a 117th-minute penalty.
It was the last thing Bournemouth wanted given their 550-mile round trip to Lancashire but Federici gave them a happy ending, diving to his right for each save.
The Cherries then had to dash to get their flight to Dorset leaving proud Preston manager Simon Grayson to say: 'If we showed form like that in the league, we would be in the top six. There was a confident air about the training ground this week and you saw the performance tonight.'
