'38 is a crazy number. It’s not fun when you see things start to change,' she said. 'When you’re in your teens or twenties, there is an abundance of ingénue parts which are exciting to play. But at [my age], you’re usually the wife or the girlfriend, a sort of second-class citizen.'

'There are more interesting roles for women when they get a bit older,' she added.

As an actress in her late 30s, Liv has found an interesting role for herself on the HBO series The Leftovers, playing Megan Abbott, a woman who is planning to get married until she becomes targeted by a cult.

And Liv noted that she has no idea what is going to happen to her character.

'With a film, you have the script, and you know the beginning, middle and end. With TV, they write as they go. I have no idea what my character is going to be doing … which is frustrating,' she said. 'Part of me loves it, and part of me hates it, having no control.'

'Being comfortable in the unknown is hard for humans; even if we don’t really know what’s going to happen, we kind of trick ourselves into thinking we have a plan,' she added. 'This latest career move has been an exercise in letting go.'

Liv, who divorced her 10-year-old son Milo's father Royston Langdon in 2008, admitted that she once had strict views when it came to matrimony.

'I had this philosophy that you should only get married once,' she explained. 'But then, of course, that changes. I definitely believe we have lessons we learn through our relationships.'

The Leftovers star has found love again, and she and her rumored fiance David Gardner welcomed their son Sailor into the world, 16 weeks early, in February. David also has a son from a previous marriage, an eight-year-old boy named Grey. The mother-of-two explained that her unconventional childhood helped her to see the beauty in all types of love.

'During my upbringing, I saw glimpses of so many different ways of living,' she said. 'My aunt and my uncle are still together and still have the house that I lived in with them. So I had that example. And then I had my mom and my dad, and that was definitely more eccentric. I saw so many forms of love and family.'

Rock a black lace dress like Liv

Liv Tyler was one of the many Givenchy-clad celebrities at the French house's first-ever New York show. And, among the many choices she could have had, she chose a demure long-sleeved lace dress from the fall collection.

Although it appears quite conservative, check out the various panels of contrasting fabric--jacquard, velvet, devore, jersey and chiffon--topped off with fringe at the shoulders. This is not your every day, knee-length lace dress. And notice the cross emblazoned across the chest, another nod to Riccardo Tisci's Catholic upbringing, giving the rocker's daughter a decidedly gothic edge.

If you're a bit hesitant about spending close to 7k on a dress, we've uncovered our favorites below that won't break the bank, including a paneled frock at Shoptiques for only $70! Liv added: 'The main thing I picked up from all of it is that where you live and what your job is - those things are temporary. It’s your family, no matter where you are, that always exists. Whether someone is alive or dead or near or far, your people are your people.'

And for the raven-haired beauty, there is nothing more important than being mother - not even her acting career.

'I didn’t see how I could go away for three months to make a film and be the mother I wanted to be,' Liv said of her changing priorities.

Being a working mom is far from easy, and Liv admitted that she sometimes feels like she is 'conducting an orchestra, because there are so many moving parts'.

However, she noted that her favorite thing about being a parent is learning from the 'push-and-pull dynamic of mother and child'.

'Having children, I learned about my own strength,' she explained.

Liv was also candid about how her relationship with fame has changed. While she said she was braver in her younger years, she recalled not wanting to out in the world as a celebrity when she was a single mom in her early 30s.

The actress said she is now more comfortable balancing her celebrity status with her desire to be close to home, and her Leftover's co-star Justin Theroux is quick to praise her positive outlook on life.

'She’s sunny-side up, not sunny-side down,' he said. 'Liv carries this incredible optimism in life. There’s a wonder to her. She’s a seeker. She’s looking for the next most interesting experience in life, in love, in everything.'
