Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb has claimed the club have received no offers for England international Stewart Downing, or his team-mate Jonathan Woodgate.

While Boro are looking to step up their bid for Brazilian striker Afonso Alves this week, they are also expected to fight off bids from Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United for the Middlesbrough-born pair.

Lamb said: "It is the last week of the transfer window so it is the silly season and speculation is rife but we have had no offers for any of our players."

Lamb, who has been working alongside manager Gareth Southgate to land Alves and fellow countryman Fred from Lyon, insists the work will continue until the end of the transfer window.

He added: "We are working very hard to try to strengthen the squad. As always, it is not easy to make progress in the January transfer window but we will keep working at making a breakthrough."
