That speech was highly anticipated, given a certain disconnect between Francis' focus on social justice and a merciful church and the culture wars that America's bishops have waged in recent years over abortion and gay rights.

NEW Disgraced news anchor Brian Williams returned to TV yesterday following a six month layoff - and was greeted with ridicule on social media. Williams made his debut as a breaking news anchor on MSNBC yesterday afternoon, reporting on the arrival of Pope Francis in the United States. However, Twitter users quickly began mocking the disgraced anchor using the hashtag #BrianWilliamsPopestories - a gathering of ludicrous scenarios he could claim to be a part of.

A gripping new book, called 'Children by Monsters', charts the often tragedy-stricken lives of the children born to the world's most feared dictators, tyrants' sometimes illegitimate offspring, who spent their lives in their father's shadows. There is the daughter of fearsome Romanian dictator Nicolae Causescu, Zola-Elena (pictured), who was jailed for undermining national security. At her trial she was described as a 'nymphomaniac' who 'drank like a fish'. His son, Nicu, doesn't fare much better. The book describes him as 'an out-of-control drunk and a rapist'. Russian dictator Joseph Stalin mocked his son, Yakov, when he tried to shoot himself in the head and missed. Yakov, an officer with the Red Army, was captured by the Germans during WWII, who offered to exchange him. Stalin refused, saying: 'I will not trade a Marshal for a Lieutenant.' Italian fascist Benito Mussolini fell out with his favourite daughter, Edda, because he refused to intervene when her husband was sentenced to death for attempting to topple the fascist regime. US author Jay Nordlinger said: 'As a rule, I went for the worst of the lot. You have to be very bad indeed - drenched in blood - to qualify for my book'

Destiny Mantia, from Lincoln County, Missouri, wrote a powerful open letter on Facebook, top right, after her husband Corey Mantia and son Parker, pictured with her, left, were killed by a drunk-driver. The 22-year-old family's minivan was hit by Shanna D Cook, who was under the influence of alcohol and swerved into their side of the road, killing herself and Parker at the scene, bottom right.

David Tepper (top right) bought the ocean-facing property in Sagaponack, New York, in 2010 from John Corzine's (bottom right) ex-wife. He paid $43.5million for Corzine's former summer getaway - making it the most expensive home in the Hamptons at the time. The following summer, he razed the 6,165 square foot home to the ground in order to build a completely new and much larger mansion. Now, five years later, Tepper's renovation is finally finished, and the sprawling estate (pictured main, now, and inset, after Corzine's former home was demolished in 2012, inset right) boasts a large pool and tennis court on site as well as a spectacular ocean view.

Israeli forces shot dead a female Palestinian attacker after she attempted to stab a soldier at a West Bank checkpoint on Tuesday, as tensions continued to simmer ahead of this week's major Jewish and Muslim holidays. The woman later died of her injuries.The military said forces opened fire and 'identified a hit' following the incident in the West Bank city of Hebron.The woman was identified as 18-year-old university student Hadeel al-Hashlamon. She was taken to an Israeli hospital in critical condition and her father, Salah al-Hashlamon, said she later died of her injuries. The soldier was not wounded.

Gifford's will was filed last week in Greenwich Probate Court in Connecticut and names Lee as executor of the estate, with reign over what to give kids Cody, 25, and Cassidy, 22. Page Six reports that while the estate was valued in court documents at $10 million, Gifford's Greenwich waterfront home is worth $22 million, while a Key Largo property is worth a further $2.5 million. Out of the total estate, about $2 million was to be divided up between his three children from his first marriage to college sweetheart Maxine Avis Ewart. Victoria Gifford, 58, of Washington, DC, and son Jeffrey Gifford, 63, of Nevada, were given $500,000 each. Kyle Gifford, 60, who was severely injured in a car crash, was left $1 million in a trust fund.

Jaromir Jagr, 43, was captured on camera in bed next to an 18-year-old model from the Czech Republic when she took a selfie (left) of them snuggled up under the covers while he dozed in the background. The model, Catherine from Moravia, allegedly attempted to blackmail Jagr for $2,000 and threatened to publish the photo. He said 'I don't care'. After it leaked on social media, Jagr fans began creating their own versions of the photo (right). A woman in Cork, Ireland, has captured eery footage of 'paranormal activity' occurring in her home, after household objects began flying around her kitchen. Loud crashes can be heard as the video shows metal bowls clattering to the floor, cupboard doors swinging open and a red bucket sliding across the room, appearing to be heading straight for her.  'We have a guest in our home,' Ashy Murphy said after she shared the disturbing footage on Tuesday.

NEW The simple method was invented by Monique Bowley, who placed fourth in Australia's Greatest Bake Off. It requires (pictured): 1) Four cups of self-raising flour, one tub of cream and a can of lemonade; 2) First tip the flour into a mixing bowl; 3) Then add the cream, followed by a whole can of lemonade, then combine; 4) Sprinkle flour onto the surface of a table and lightly knead the dough; 5) Cut dough out into circles then place the on a lined baking tray; 6) Pop your scones into the oven at 200 degrees and bake for 15 minutes.

Kristen Mundell was reduced to tears by the police officers' actions during her wedding this weekend. Her father, Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Kent Mundell (inset) died in 2009, when Mundell was just 16. Family friend and Seattle Police Detective Don Jones walked Mundell down the aisle and was the first officer to dance with the stunning bride during the reception. Three other officers joined the dance in which Mundell was reduced to tears.

Steve Harvey was left speechless by a contestant on a recent episode of Family Feud. Kathy Baker, 49 (inset), the Chief Financial Officer at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, was taking a resistance training class in Livermore when the 80-year-old woman plowed through the front glass doors around 6.20 a.m. Tuesday. The driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake, police said, and barreled 60 feet through the gym before crashing into a wall. Seven were taken to hospital, where Baker was later died. She was a respected employee of Lawrence Livermore who had worked at the lab since 2001. She was made CFO in 2012. Her husband, Jeff Baker, who also works at the lab, described her as 'the most wonderful, caring person you've ever met'.

Developers have announced ambitious plans to build the world's largest green roof - featuring sprawling green fields, apartments, offices and four miles of running trails - on a neglected shopping mall in the heart of Silicon Valley (illustrated main picture). If approval for the $3billion project is received, the green space would measure a total of 30 acres and feature artificially-created running trails (inset), vineyards and orchards. Hayley Quinn, a dating expert from London, left, created the social experiment to see how men would react to the nice gesture - and most of them were clueless it was supposed to be romantic. The 28-year-old took to the streets of East London giving out sunflowers to men she thought were attractive - and tried to start flirting with them. A photo featuring Ingrid Wood and Ross Uebergang on their wedding day in Blackall in western Queensland has raised more than $11,000 (16,000 Australian dollars) for a rural charity after a social media campaign. In the week before their wedding, Ms Wood's family was forced to remove all of their stock from their 16,000 hectare property due to the financial strain brought on by the drought. Her family's plight and witnessing the severe effects the drought has had on the Blackall community inspired wedding photographer, Edwina Robertson, to raise money. She pledged to donate $2 (3 Australian dollars) for every share the photo of the newlyweds received during a 24 hour period .
