West Ham 2-0 Newcastle: Dimitri Payet at the double as midfielder steals show by delivering Hammer blow to flightless Magpies

  • West Ham summer signing Dimitri Payet opened the scoring in the ninth minute during Upton Park fixture
  • Payet doubled his side's lead shortly after the half-time interval to pile more misery on Newcastle
  • Newcastle remain in the bottom three after failing to win any of their five Premier League games
  • Steve McClaren came up against Slaven Bilic for the first time since his England side were beaten by Croatia
  • Substitute Andy Carroll made his first West Ham appearance since February 11, 2015

Like his previous encounter against Slaven Bilic; Newcastle manager Steve McClaren ended Monday night a loser.

The last time the managerial duo clashed, England's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008 were ended by Croatia as McClaren suffered the most humiliating night of his career at Wembley.

This time, Bilic had his number again; the Hammers cruising to victory over hapless Newcastle.

That fateful night in November 2007 coined the phrase 'Wally with the Brolly'.

At least the heavy rain that had engulfed east London subsided before kick off. If not; then McClaren may have faced another raft of embarrassing puns on Tuesday morning.

In the hours leading up to the qualifier eight years ago, Bilic took his players for a walk around London in an attempt to relax them.

This time, it was McClaren's turn; but it was far from a tranquil trot as Newcastle were forced to walk the final part of their journey to Upton Park due to heavy traffic around east London.

McClaren requested the 8pm kick-off time be delayed; but his offer was rejected by the Premier League.

'We didn't do what we've been doing for the first four games; I don't know what it was,' said McClaren.

'The journey? Late getting here? A 10 minute warm up? But we said no excuses, we told the players to just get on with it.

'I don't want to make excuses, but it's not the best preparations. This was a big wake up call for us.'

That night in 2007 turned out to be McClaren's final game in charge of England. The consequences will not be as severe after this defeat.

However, that doesn't hide the fact McClaren is without a league win since his summer appointment.

The travel disruption, of course, didn't help; but it wasn't as if West Ham had shown the sort of home form that suggested they would take full of advantage of the Geordies' misfortune.

The euphoric wins at Arsenal and Liverpool have taken the edge off West Ham's worrying start to proceedings at Upton Park.

SUPER STAT

Newcastle have had three shots on target this month - all from right back Daryl Janmaat

The Hammers had lost both their home matches ahead of Monday night's clash; to Leicester and Bournemouth.

It was hardly the way West Ham fans had envisaged their final season at the Boleyn progressing.

What happened in the ninth minute was, however, as Dimitri Payet illustrated exactly why he's earned rave reviews so far this season.

Receiving Mark Noble's pass on the edge of the box, Payet effortlessly stroked home with the inside of his boot to put Bilic's men ahead.

The finish was nonchalant, yet exquisite; Tim Krul, diving to his left, had no chance.

If before the game the talk was about McClaren versus Bilic, then by the final whistle Payet was the only name on supporters' lips.

It was turning into supershow from the talented Frenchman.

He could have assisted another three before hammering home the final nail in Newcastle's coffin three minutes after the restart.

Victor Moses, who was having a promising debut, powered a shot off the underside of the bar after a strong run past Massadio Haidara; and Payet did the rest, expertly volleying the rebound past Krul.

The finish was far from simple; but Payet made it look so, keeping his eyes fixed firmly on the ball as it dropped out of the sky before stroking home.

'He is the player I really wanted from the start and I doubted he would come,' raved Bilic, who introduced Andy Carroll in the 88th minute as the striker made his return from a long-term knee injury.

'It happened so quickly I couldn’t believe it. It got done in five days and I didn’t believe it would happen.'

What McClaren would do for a player like Payet right now.

Indeed, the lack of fight from Newcastle, who sit bottom this morning, following Payet's second will keep McClaren fully occupied this week.

Lose at home to Watford this weekend; then McClaren may have to get used to being called a 'wally'.
