Brendan Rodgers is fighting to save his Liverpool job after owners FSG sounded out Carlo Ancelotti about replacing him as manager.
Ancelotti, who won the European Cup with AC Milan and Real Madrid, has been approached to take over from Rodgers after Liverpool’s poor start to the season.
It is understood Rodgers retains the support of some decision-makers at Liverpool, but his job is now hanging by a thread after Ancelotti was contacted about his position.

Rodgers has made a poor start to the season and their latest result - a 1-1 draw with Norwich - has put the Liverpool manager under even greater scrutiny.
He is now 2-1 second favourite - behind Sunderland's Dick Advocaat - to be the next Premier League manager out of a job.
The 3-0 Anfield defeat by West Ham, along with the loss at Manchester Uinted, have convinced FSG to consider alternatives.
Liverpool face 18-1 outsiders Carlisle in the Capital One Cup third round on Wednesday evening, but Rodgers’ position is under huge scrutiny after it emerged that FSG are already talking to potential replacements.
Ancelotti has a glittering CV and won the Double with Chelsea after joining them from AC Milan.
He would need to be convinced that Liverpool is a viable proposition after a career of inheriting teams at their peak.
Ancelotti has always been a big admirer of the Reds, however.
'I’ve followed Liverpool since 1984 after facing them with Roma in the European Cup Final, when we lost on penalties,' he said last year.
'It’s always been a club that excites me. The “You’ll Never Walk Alone” they sing is incredible. Nobody sings an anthem like Liverpool fans.'
The Italian also managed Paris Saint-Germain to the French league title before landing his dream job with Real Madrid, where he won their historic 10th European Cup.
He opted for a sabbatical when he was sacked by Real at the end of last season and has been spending time between his homes in London and Vancouver.
But Ancelotti is a wanted man again and Liverpool want the Italian to succeed Rodgers after their failure to improve on last season’s dismal finish to the season.
