SINGLES.
SINGLES. Following its No.1 debut last week, Justice Crew’s Que Sera retains the No.1 spot this week. Its second week at the top of the chart matches the group’s previous best set by their first No.1, Boom Boom (No.1 Aug. ’12). The group will be appearing at the Bass In The Grass festival in Darwin this weekend alongside Vance Joy, The Living End and Rufus amongst others. After sneaking into the top ten last week, American DJ/producer ZHU hits the top five with Faded jumping six spots to No.4. The producer recently hinted at the possibility of an Australian tour sometime in 2014. Also making their first move in to the top ten is German folk/electronic duo Milky Chance. In its fourth week on the chart their song Stolen Dance, jumps four spots to No.9. Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds Of Summer, score two debuts this week to make a total of three singles in the top 20 - Don’t Stop at No.12, Good Girls at No.19 and former chart topper She Looks So Perfect (No.1 Mar. ’14) at No.20. The last time anyone was able to do this was almost twelve months ago in June 2013, at the climax of The Voice competition when Harrison Craig had the songs Unchained Melody, Unconditional and More Than A Dream at No.5, No.15 and No.19 respectively.
No.12 DON’T STOP – 5 Seconds Of Summer. Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds Of Summer, score the two highest debuts this week with the first being Don’t Stop. The song is the follow-up to the band’s No.1 single She Looks So Perfect (No.1 Mar. ’14). The band charts on the back of their appearance on Sunrise last week and the Billboard Music Awards.
No.19 GOOD GIRLS – 5 Seconds Of Summer. Along with Don’t Stop, 5 seconds Of Summer scores another debut with Good Girls. The track has become available as part of the pre-release campaign for the band’s debut self-titled album, set for release at the end of June. It marks their fourth appearance on the ARIA charts. Along with their Sunrise appearance, the band recently completed their Australian tour and will be supporting One Direction touring UK later this month.
No.40 SEA OF FLAGS – Jessica Mauboy. Sea Of Flags is Jessica Mauboy’s eighteenth top 50 single as a lead artist, having performed the track during the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Copenhagen, Denmark last weekend. Mauboy was the first solo artist from outside Europe to perform as a guest at Eurovision. It becomes her second debut of 2014 following Never Be The Same (No.6 Apr.’ 14).
No.44 GOOD KISSER – Usher. US R&B singer Usher makes his twenty-third appearance on the ARIA Singles chart this week with his new single Good Kisser, taken from his upcoming eighth studio album. It marks his first appearance on the chart since Numb (No.39 Oct. ’12). So far in his career, Usher has amassed eleven top ten hits including two chart toppers - OMG (No.1 May ’10) and Yeah (No.1 Mar. ’04).
No.51 WASTED – Tiesto Feat. Matthew Koma. After scoring his first ARIA top ten single with Red Lights (No.8 Jan. ’14), Dutch DJ/producer Tiesto returns to the charts with Wasted. It is the second single from his upcoming fifth studio album A Town Called Paradise, due for release in June. Tiesto is joined on the track by US singer/songwriter Matthew Koma, who was the guest vocalist on Find You (No.68 Feb. ’14) and the writer of Clarity (No.13 Aug. ’13), both by German producer Zedd.
No.58 UNTIL IT’S GONE – Linkin Park. US rock band Linkin Park, make their first appearance on the ARIA Singles chart in almost two years with Until It’s Gone. It is the second single from their upcoming sixth studio album The Hunting Party, due out in June. They were last in the charts with Burn It All Down (No.41 July ’12). Until It’s Gone becomes the bands twentieth ARIA top 100 single.
No.66 CALM AFTER THE STORM – The Common Linnets. The Common Linnets are a Dutch band that formed in 2013 for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Made up of individual artists Ilse DeLange and Waylon, the group makes their ARIA chart debut this week with their song Calm After The Storm. The song topped the charts in their homeland. Performed at the competition last weekend, the song appears on the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 Copenhagen album which reaches a new peak of No.13 on the ARIA Albums chart this week.
No.72 REAL GIRLS EAT CAKE – The Janoskians. Melbourne group The Janoskians, make their third appearance on the ARIA charts this week with Real Girls Eat Cake. It follows on from Best Friends (No.30 May ’13) and their highest charting single to date, Set This World On Fire (No.19 Oct. ’12). The release coincides with their Got Cake Tour which will see them tour the UK, US and Europe later in the year.
No.81 UNDO – Sanna Nielsen. Representing Sweden at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, singer Sanna Nielsen makes her ARIA chart debut with the song she performed at the final last week, Undo. The song placed Sweden third in the competition. The song appears on the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 Copenhagen album, which sits at No.13 this week.
ALBUMS.
ALBUMS. It was a close race this week but The Black Keys won out, with their eighth studio album Turn Blue, taking the top spot. It beat out strong competition from the Mother’s Day favourite and former chart topper To Be Loved (No.1 Apr. ’13) by Michael Buble, who holds the No.2 spot for the second straight week. On the back of Mother’s Day sales and the tour, the former No.1 put up quite a fight as it attempted a return to the peak it held at the same time last year. Although Buble didn’t beat The Black Keys to the summit, he did beat Michael Jackson’s second posthumous release Xscape, which debuts at No.3 this week. Last week’s chart topper Frozen, drops to No.4. Off the back of their recent Australian tour, UK rock band Arctic Monkeys return to the top ten with their chart topping album AM (No.1 Sep. ’13), jumping five spots to No.8. It is the highest position the album has reached since September last year. Soaring into the top 20 this week is Eurovision Song Contest 2014 Copenhagen, which jumps from No.97 to No.13. Featuring all the songs performed at the event, including Undo and Calm After The Storm which debut at No.81 and No.66 on the ARIA Singles chart respectively. It is the third straight top 50 appearance on the ARIA Albums chart by a Eurovision soundtrack peaking higher than 2013 (No.16 May ’13) and 2012 (No.15 June ’12).
No.1 TURN BLUE – The Black Keys. American rock duo The Black Keys, pick up their first No.1 on the ARIA Albums chart with their eight studio album Turn Blue. The album is the follow-up to 2011’s El Camino (No.3 Feb. ’12) and features the single Fever (No.65 Apr. ’14). Turn Blue finds The Black Keys again working with producer Danger Mouse, who has produced each of their albums since Attack And Release (No.12 Apr. ’08). Turn Blue marks their seventh appearance on the ARIA Albums chart.
No.3 XSCAPE – Michael Jackson. Xscape is the second posthumous album of previously unreleased material from the late Michael Jackson. It features material originally recorded by Jackson between 1983 and 1999, retooled and contemporized by a team of producers lead by Timbaland. The album’s release comes five years after Jackson’s passing and just over three years since the first posthumous release, Michael (No.10 Dec. ’10). It features the single Love Never Felt So Good which reaches a new peak at No.28 on the ARIA Singles chart this week.
No.30 THE BEARD ALBUM – The Beards. Australian rock band The Beards, make their second appearance on the ARIA Albums chart with their fourth studio album, The Beard Album. It follows on from Having A Beard Is The New Not Having A Beard (No.63 Mar. ’12) and becomes their highest charting album to date. The band is currently touring nationally in support of the album.
No.36 GLORIOUS - Foxes. British singer/songwriter Louisa Allen, better known by her stage name Foxes, makes her first appearance on the ARIA Albums chart this week with her debut album, Glorious. The album features the single Let Go For Tonight (No.59 Mar. ’14) and debuts at No.5 on the UK Albums chart this week.
No.38 I NEVER LEARN – Lykke Li. Swedish singer/songwriter Lykke Li, makes her second appearance on the ARIA Albums chart with her third studio album, I Never Learn. It follows on from Wounded Rhymes (No.30 Mar. ’11), which remains her highest charting release to date. I Never Learn reached No.2 on the Swedish charts.
No.44 NABUMA RUBBER BAND – Little Dragon. Swedish indie band Little Dragon, make their second appearance on the ARIA Albums chart this week with their fourth studio album Nabuma Rubberband. It follows on from Ritual Union (No.91 Aug. ’11) and becomes their highest charting album to date.
No.47 KILLER BE KILLED – Killer Be Killed. Made up of members of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sepeltura, Mastodon and The Mars Volta, metal band Killer Be Killed make their first appearance on the ARIA charts with their debut self-titled album.
No.58 PINK LEMONADE – Closure In Moscow. Australian progressive rock band Closure In Moscow, make their ARIA chart debut with their second studio album Pink Lemonade. It follows on from 2009’s First Temple. The band is made up of Christopher de Cinque, Mansur Zennelli, Michael Barrett, Salvatore Aidone and Duncan Millar. The band is currently touring nationally in support of the album.
No.61 UNREPENTANT GERALDINES – Tori Amos. American singer/songwriter Tori Amos, makes her first appearance on the ARIA charts since 2012 with her fourteenth studio album, Unrepentant Geraldines. Amos last charted with Gold Dust (No.60 Oct. ’12) and made her ARIA chart debut more than twenty years ago with Little Earthquakes (No.14 June ’92). Since then Amos has amassed five top ten albums with her most recent being Strangelittlegirls (No.7 Sep. ’01).
No.79 DOWN IV – PART II EP – Down. American metal band Down, made their ARIA chart debut back in 1995 with their first album NOLA (No.75 Oct. ’95). Almost twenty years later, they make their fifth appearance this week with Down IV – Part II EP. The six track EP follows on from Down IV Part I – The Purple EP (No.58 Sep. ’12). The band scored their highest charting album with Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow (No.45 Apr. ’02). Singer Phil Anselmo topped the charts with his previous band Pantera, with the album Far Beyond Driven (No.1 Mar. ’94).
No.87 NATALIE MERCHANT – Natalie Merchant. American singer/songwriter and former member of rock band 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant makes her first appearance on the ARIA charts in over a decade with her self-titled sixth solo studio album. It is the follow up to 2010’s Leave Your Sleep. Merchant last charted with her third album Motherland (No.83 Feb. ’02) and scored her highest charting album to date with Tigerlily (No.18 Sep. ’95).
